Sierra Madre School is a great place to learn and grow. They teach it all from Language Art, Math and Science to Music and Art.

We have wonderfully qualified teachers, a highly visible and effective principal, supportive parent and community volunteers, and happy students who come to school ready to achieve and excel.

This school is awesome. I have no other words to describe it. We came from NCAS and left because of bullying and came here to see a true community environment and caring new friends, the best community and school situation I could hope for my two kids. Thank you Mrs. B -- You're awesome!

My son began kindergarten in the K-1 inclusion class this fall and he is flourishing and thoroughly enjoying his experience. The teaching team of Miss Perez, Miss Kathy, Mr. G and Miss Tammy bring a little bit of everything from performing arts to humor into their approaches and moving through the rotations is a great way for the wee souls to stay connected in what is a really long day for such a young sprout. We love the program, the school , the community and the wonderfully dedicated principal too. Most important, our son loves school, loves his teachers and is happy and safe!

My daughter is in kindergarten, and she is enjoying the atmosphere of learning and creativity. Every morning there is at least 2 other volunteer parents there to help the class. Parent involvement is quite high, and my husband and I like the diversity of the school and community.

Parents at The Sierra Madre School love to participate! If it is in the classroom, a fundraiser or a social issue that needs attention a parent will be there!. The kids at Sierra Madre School are beautiful souls and they are all special and have their own unique talents and gifts.

SME is an incredible school with an outstanding staff of teachers and administrators. There is nothing like watching Principal Bluemel play the piano for each grade at monthly Spotlight Assemblies! What a blessing to be in a school rich in musical and visual arts. There is also a great feeling of community amongst the families.

Sierra Madre school is the absolute best public school in The Pasadena school district. Even though Pasadena schools have a reputation of not being the greatest (folks that financially can, send their kids to Private) But not Sierra Madrians! Instead we have so many parents wanting to volunteer you almost have to get in line. I think with the acception of our very wonderful teachers and principal that the reason we are so great is because of the high volume of parents participating in our school. I attended Sierra Madre school as a child myself and it hasn't lost any of it's charm or appeal over the last 40 years, as a matter of fact. it's gotten better and still gets better every year with proof of our test scores going up every year. Our school is so desirable that we have absolutely no room for open enrollment because the majority of our spots are filled by residents! Yolanda

I have two daughters, 8 and 12, who have been going to Sierra Madre School for over two years now. I love this school because my daughter's love this school. They enjoy going every morning. I attribute that to the trickle from the top down. The principal and vice principal are dedicated experienced educators with vision. The teachers are incredibly creative and flexible. I would move mountains for them. And it all shows in the student body -- who they are, how they treat each other and the world.

Our school is AWESOME! We have the BEST parents in the world, which in turn gives us amazing students who have a love of learning instilled in them from home! Our principal is Wonder Woman, running two separate campuses with the help of a fantastic vice principal. Our staff is second to NONE! We love what we do and we enjoy changing the lives of children one day at a time. I have the BEST job in the world, and I am so lucky to be a teacher at Sierra Madre!

I have 3 children attending this school. Two at the Elementary and one at the Middle School. This is what I have found after transferring from a private school: More opportunites in music, drama and visual arts More diverse population-economic and ethnic Teachers are experienced High academic performance is a goal that teachers, parents, and students work toward together Adminstration is open and encourages parent involvement This school as most schools in PUSD are moving onward and upward to a higher level of education and real life experiences. No school is perfect for every child or parent but Sierra Madre School is a shining example of what can happen when teachers, administrators and parents work together to educate children.

Can we talk test scores? Sierra Madre School just scored highest in the district at 871 API. My experience of the teachers, administrators, and support staff is that they are highly devoted to our school and take great pride in their work. The parent participation at this school is stellar and you will always see a myriad of parent volunteers inside and outside the classroom on any given day. Kinder through 3rd grade class sizes are 20 to 1. This school does have an amazing Visual and Performing Arts Program and also excels in math. The district's use of Open Court Language Arts is limiting for the level of the students but teachers do supplement. The Special Ed inclusion program in the primary age classes is excellent, focusing on understanding, utilizing personal strengths, and mentoring. This is just as enriching for typically developing students as it is for students with special needs.

we came to the school from a 'blue`ribbon' school a few years ago and are very happy with our experience. There are some kids who are not well-mannered etc. but the parents and home setting are more likely to cause and encourage this than the school - if staff hears or sees bad behavior it is addresed. A smaller class size would be better but this is a public school and they have what they are told to have. I am glad my child is learning to deal with the real world with all it's colors, religions and ethnicities and not coddled in some 'white castle' of learning.

Compared to other school in Pasadena this school is very good, but after having researched and seen what other districts, and even countries, have to offer, Sierra Madre school is mediocre at best. Many of the teachers are very professional and put forth their best effort, but many also seem to only be putting in the hours and not trying very hard. There seems to be too much emphasis placed on individual self-esteem and not enough on social responsibility. The result is many rude and disrespectful students. The visual arts program is good. I just wish they spent more time on producing something truly artistic instead of things that cam be quickly done in one lesson. Overall I think the school is not bad, parents have to be a strong advocates for their children in order to get a good education.

My son transferred to Sierra Madre School for fourth grade last year; this year I have an incoming kindergarten student and a transferring eighth-grader as well. This school is full of caring and competent staff (not just the teachers!), with a wonderful principal. The arts, so often missing as a 'subject' these days, are integrated throughout the curriculum, and there is a real culture of appreciation for the arts at this remarkable public school.

We transferred our daughter to this school from another school. Finally she is happy and thriving. Our son starts this year. Great parent involvement. All elements of learning are encouraged. The community is super supportive. We have very high academic expectations for our children, and at the same time we want them to be well rounded and love learning and school. Sierra Madre meets our goals so far. We could not be happier with our choice

I would not change a thing about my family's expereince so far at Sierra Madre School. The great, the good, and the not so good...we feel very fortunate to be a part of this particular learning community.

I have a child in K, 3rd, and 5th grade. There is a wonderful balance of academics and the arts. The staff and administration are tops!

My son is in Kindergarten at SME and loves it. We, too, got in through open enrollment and are completely satisfied with our choice of public over private. His two teachers are kind and caring, and have over thirty years experience between them. They are able to fit an incredible amount of learning into a very short period of time. The parent involvement is amazing and enables differentiated treatment so that those children who need a little extra help are assisted, and those that are a bit ahead are challenged. The entire school is friendly and helpful and has welcomed us with open arms. We are excited to spend the next 8 plus years there.

Our son is in Kindergarten and, so far, we are very pleased. He has a very experienced teacher that is supplementing the core curriculum with really interesting and fun activities. They've had field trips to the local police station, Caltech etc. SMS isn't our neighborhood school so we got in through open enrollement. Private was the backup for us and we were thrilled when the lottery worked in our favor!

Great opportunity for special needs children.

I find the effort is there for the advance classes but way too overcrowded. Only the students who can completely go it on their own will do well. I find the english sorely lacking in the ability to write anything beyond writing to do well on the state standard testing. The math curriculum is booooring and lacks creativity. Upper campus math teachers seem to try very hard. Not sure why this school doesn't impress me as much as when I first checked it out. It is a decent school, but truly seems to depend on the grade you are in.

Our children have had a wonderful experience at Sierra Madre Elementry. The principal does a great job and the teachers have been very committed.

This school thrives because of the heavy parental involvement. The school should feel good about the extent the parents have brought in after-school programs, other enrichment programs and involve themselves in the reading program. The district should commend this type of volunteerism and do more to help the school, such as making sure there is enough paper for the teachers to make copies for the student assignments.
