Posted By: parent Quality Score: 4 2009-05-21 “Warner has been fantastic so far. My child is just completing kindergarten and I've been told that the kindergartners test as high as some 2nd graders. It's extremely academic and could be a problem if your child can't keep up. There is a ton of parental involvement, which is fantastic, but be prepared... it's a lot! The only other complaint is fundraising. It never ends. Count on contributing year round, on an almost daily basis. It would be better if they'd just tell you how much it is going to cost at the beginning of the year and leaving people alone for a couple of weeks at a time. This is kind of like a public/private school. I suppose you don't have to pay, but the pressure is definitely there to contribute and that is partly why the school is so good.” Posted By: parent Quality Score: 5 2008-09-04 “Warner Avenue is the jewel in the crown of LAUSD Elementary Schools. With generally excellent teachers and an administration that is able to prevent LAUSD from harming the school, it is the best public school gets. Academically it is more rigorous than most private schools, yet offers a more socially stimulating environment with more than 600 kids. The active parent population provides ample support in terms of time and money which allows all children to benefit from many programs the city will not pay for. Warner is well equipped and supported by the parents and city. The star program is fantastic. The faculty are obsessed with test scores and pay little attention to the emotional and social needs of the students. The teachers we've had have all been superb, fair, and experienced. Our main gripe: As some have alluded to here, it is very true that the unusual affluence of the typical Warner family creates an unmistakable element of wealth-based social politicking that can be extremely unpleasant for those children whose families are not in a high income strata. Many parents openly convey an arrogant sense of entitlement to the teachers and administration, and seem all too quick to use their children to expand their own professional networks rather than encourage their children to find friends based on more substantial values. The academics are as stringent as any private school and individualism is discouraged. The teachers are harsh and inflexible. The administration is overworked and often rude. They constantly hit parents up for donations to both the school and to the teachers Unless your child is a rich automaton who is happy copying War and Peace in longhand, try one of the more 'diverse' local elementary schools. My success truly comes from the education that I received at Warner Ave school.I was one of the unfortunate child that was transported from other schools in LA that had reached their student capacity. And I feel lucky to have been one of the students that was sent here. All my sucess is a result of the root of confidence that was planted by the teachers of Warner Ave School. Their academic standards are high and have remained competitive with the private schools. My oldest went on to Harvard-Westlake without any problem. They have a wonderful coach who enters the school in many city wide sports competitions. I guess my criticism lies with the changes in principals (3 in 4 years) and how willing they are to work around the massive restrictions of the larger LAUSD. And as in many schools, there are a couple teachers who should really retire. The teachers were all amazing to me except for one year of warenr. Now I currently do not seem to fnd any problems with teachers that my sister has. I graduated Warner in 2002, and I wish Warner was a middle school. Warner has a great program, I was taught more there then I am in my new school ( which I will keep unidetified). There were also great sports teams, who in my years always seemed to make it into the finals even when I was on the team. The teacches and staff give great care for the kids. The only problem with the school is the principal. Once the original principal left the school went downward and still is today (2005). I hope this improves. The kids are nice and there is a zero tolerance for bullying. Our child was wonderfully prepared when he entered middle school. The parents raise a lot of money and the school, therefore, has many extras not found in other public schools. If you are lucky enough to live or work in the neighborhood send your child to Warner. The test scores are high but that probably has much less to do with the quality of education and much more to do with the high SES of the children who attend this school. There is quite a bit of a snobbery factor to the school although most people are usually pleasant. The new principal needs to do a better job of working with parents. When I was looking for a teaching position, I was looking for a school just like Warner. The was amazing then, and I know from children who live in my neighborhood, that it is still wonderful. I have only the most fond memories of Warner, and would highly recommend it as an incredible neighborhood school.”
