West Hollywood Elementary School Reviews

After being accepted by two private schools my wife and I decided to send our daughter public. We were a little worried at first but we are so happy we did! WHE is a great school with great parent involvement. The teachers and new principal are great! My daughter scored a 99% on her CAT6 score! It is so great to have local neighborhood kids go to the same school. We are so happy with the school.

My spouse and I were very concerned about LAUSD schools in general given the horror stories about a lack of funds, unmotivated teachers and staff and a curriculum aimed squarely at the average. What a great surprise WeHo Elementary has turned out to be! The principal, Mr. Hum, is very open to ideas and suggestions - it shocked me that he not only knew all the children by name but that he also knew their temperatments, strengths and weaknesses. The Kindergarten teachers are wonderfuly people - they aim to work with each child at his or her level and very genuine caring people. The parent's group (or booster club) Friends of West Hollywood Elementary is very active and enthusiastic and has managed to bring an amazing amount of resources to school in a short time. Great School - definitely worth a visit if you live in the area!!

Excellant School. My son and I are very happy

I love this school and all it has to offer the children of Los Angeles Unified. My son had issues adjusting to his new enviornment at West Hollywood and through the support of the principal and staff he made it through. Why? because just as I believed in change and wanted to give him another chance, the school was also in agreement and now he is an outstanding student!

West Hollywood Elementary is absolutely wonderful. The teachers care so much about our children and use a variety of differentiated instruction and project based learning. We have been extremely happy with our children's accomplishments. Being the small school that it is, West Hollywood is more like a family.

This is an outstanding little school look for it to become west hollywood s best kept secret! The teachers are good-natured, but firm. The classroom is focused on achievement in many areas as well as academics; as a result, the children receive respect & appreciation for good citizenship as well and good grades. The class size is small (1st grade aprox 19/21 students per class), so everyone gets attention and assistance if needed. Parents participate regularly and the principal seems to know every child on a first name basis. I cant believe we lucked-out and found this gem of a school.

I wouldn't have my son go to any other school. I love West Hollywood, Elementary. The principal is very involved and knows every single childs name and greets them each morning. The kindergarten teachers are fantastic, both stern but extremely loving. The Boys & Girls club is wonderful too!

In the last two years whe has increased their api over 80 points (44 points just in 2006), they were approved to be a center of advanced studies in math, the principle has completely focused her teachers on project-based learning, the after school care is free and enrichment classes are not only outstanding but extremely inexpensive (ex: $40 for 8 weeks of sculpture, drums, tai chi, etc., It's an arts prototype school offering music, drama and art, pe enrichment with focusfish, and best of all it's a small, charming school with fabulous teachers, great parents, a very active booster club, and last but not least it is thoroughly enjoying the community's new found attention since local families have returned the last couple of years. Super school that you can't help but to love!

Great School and still getting better every day! Parents: Check this one out.

This school used to have a bad rap but in the last 3 years it has gone through some major changes. I was seriously going to homeschool my daughter because I was not happy with my school choices, then I found out about this little gem. The school size is small (about 300 for K-6) which is very important to me, and is super clean. The new principal rocks and teachers (many of which are new) really do care about the students. Full day K, wonderful enrichment classes, and free after school care are just a few things I like. My daughter started K there and is now in 2nd grade. My son will be starting K next year and I only get more excited about this school and what it offers each year that goes by.

Caring teachers, rigorous academics

The school is great, Its test scores are getting better as the parent involvement grows. We turned down going to a private school and a charter school in favor of going here and are very happy we did. My daughter loves the school and as parents we are happy that we can help at the school and participate in our childs learning. We have outside groups come in for the extra classes that LAUSD doesn't provide, and the support of the community is growing steady. We got in through open enrollment and find that most of the families live near the school and this allows for alot of the kids to play together after school in the local park, and feel like a little community. This school is the one to watch, we are very happy with the school and the education it provides.

I stumbled upon this (little known) school while scrutinizing every LAUSD/private school in my area. (And some outside my area) My daughter attended first grade last year and we could not be happier. This is a very small friendly and school. Equipped with just about all the ingredients that children need to learn. And whatever it does not have -the parent participation in the FOWHE will be sure that we get it asap...We have hired a new P.E program and have an Arts prototype grant that gives the majority of the kids a taste of Art in the classroom...Not to mention free afterschool care! This year we have a lot of new teachers starting and my kindergartner is so excited about attendeing the school that her big sister felt instantly comfortable in! I feel great knowing the school will just get better and better!

I have never seen teachers care so much about their students as I do at this school.

Two years ago WHE had virtually no local families attending the school. Three local parents started encouraging other locals to return, and in 2 years the school went from having no Kinder class to 2 Kinder classrooms. Since the local families have returned we now have a 501C3 booster club, Arts Prototype (art, music, drama), FocusFish Physical Education Program (offering international dance, hip hop, karate and other untraditional & traditional non-competive sports), Screen Writers Guild 5th-grade screen play program, Wizard of Art Volunteer Arts Program, clarinet classes, Hobby day 1x/month, FREE after school enrichment program, a flourishing vegetable gardens, Open Enrollment, and we have added 6th grade making WHE one of the only K-6 schools in the area. While we are constantly adding new programs we are thrilled at our progress in just two years and look forward to watching our school grow! Visit and see what we are all about!

This is a great little school! It is small, safe and strong with academics while still allowing the children to express themselves creatively!

What a journey! As one of the original parents who brought locals back to this school, i have witnessed the transformation of WHE from the start. This school has far exceeded my vision and continues to amaze me each and every year. One child graduated, one is receiving outstanding special ed services, and my youngest begins kinder in a month. Can't imagine any other school that i would want to attend, private, charter, or otherwise!!!!

I'm a kindergarten parent. My daughter is in miss Salgado's class. She is just awesome. I have an 8 year old who went to a different school and i could really see the difference. We love MR HUM. everyone is involved in this school. The teachers are fantastics. My daughter is 6 and she knows how to read, write, shapes, math you name it she has learned so much from this school. My other child learned this stuff in 1st grade. Its just an amazing school. Thanks to all the teachers and staff for your effort on maintaing this school the way it is....

I work at this school and I can tell you first hand that the teachers are very committed to the learning quality and environment of their students. There is a great relationship between parents, teachers, and administrative staff. The assistants are also very committed to helping all the children achieve in the highest ways.

This is a great school! The environment is very warm and supportive. The children are the priority - from the teachers and staff to the very active parent community, absolutely everyone is committed to providing a top rate education and well rounded experience for the children. There are so many extras and perks, sometimes I have to remind myself it is a public school!

We love WEHO Elementary! My daughter is in 5th grade. We spent K-3rd at Rosewood and are SO glad we made the move to WEHO.It has a much better principal and is half the size. The teachers and Mr.Hum are amazing. My daughter moved up to second honors and then first honors at WEHO. She is comfortable there and really blossoming in the supportive environment. The arts prototype keeps them continually engaged in creative visual and performing arts too. Academics?Just look at the test scores and see how far above the average these kids are-it's no accident! Another big plus is the diverse student body.We are now on a quest to find a middle school of equal caliber. In her own words'I love it here! The best part is the friends I've made.I recommend this school for any kid that wants to have fun.'

My child is in 3rd grade and I'm very dissppointed in the discipline area. My child has come home to stories of 'Bill said a bad word' and 'Nancy kissed John!' I do not want my child to see these things without me talking to her. Her grades have not been succeeding and I don't think she's being taught very well. The teachers are friendly and give updates, but I'm just not very happy.

I could not be happier with WeHo! My daughter is in kindergarten and there are only 15 kids in each of the 3 Kindergarten classes - I know all of the kids and most of the parents. It is such a great community of folks. The teachers are all excellent and Mr. Hum, the principal is fantastic. The parents at this school care so much for their childs education and the community that exists within the school. We are a small school, with a lovely campus. Test scores are going up and up and the kids have a lot of extras. It'a an Arts Protoype school, we have FocusFish, Boys & Girls club - we even do an annual musical theater production. Check this school out - you will love it.

I am very proud to be a WeHo parent but most proud of the parent/teacher involvement and the academic structure of this school. It is small enough where your child is not lost in the bunch yet big enough to create a tight knit community of all ethnic and socio economic backgrounds. My son loves it and the Principal is there at all times at your fingertips and committed to the children 110%. I am also very greatful for the group of parents who are committed on a daily basis to the school and it's acheivements. I am very lucky to have been accepted during open enrollment, my son is in 1st Grade now, very happy here and in his own words; 'loves being a WeHo Wizard!'

We are now in our second year at WeHoEl and it is all that we had hoped plus more. It is a small population and the teachers, staff and principal know all the s utdents names. They are hard working and the test scores improved monumentally last year and went up again this year. The numbers are there that this school is on the rise. Additionally, there is an amazing group of proactive parents who are committed to doing what it takes to make this a jewel in a crown. For parents who live in the area and have mixed feelings about private school they should check out WeHoEl immediately. It is small like private but has the benefits of community. This is the horse to bet on!

No longer the school to watch. This is the school everyone wishes their child could attend. Amazing teachers and THE Best principal any school could hope for.

We have a daughter in K and we are very happy with our teachers , the parent participation and our new Principle Mr. Humm. The school is friendly and approachable .Parents idea's are welcomed and they have groups you can become involved with to help enhance the school. JCBJCB

We can t say enough great things about WHE. Having researched public and private in the area, and pulling my son out of a private school where we were not entirely happy, WHE has lived up to all our expectations. The teachers are phenomenal, the principal entirely on the ball, and the parental involvement is strong and resourceful. If you are in the area, I strongly recommend touring the school and considering it, even if public school was not a thought for you before. Another little secret is the new pre-school; even though it is only a half day program, it is perfect for local families who need a half day program.

wonderful. small classroom.not too much programs available.

My son attends West Hollywood Elementary, he's in his second year. I love the school, I must admit if I lived in another county I'd still drive him to WeHo. I can't say enough good things about the school, it has an excellent prinical, Mr. Hum, fantastic teachers and a very real sense of care for the childrens future outcome.
