University Senior High School Reviews

Quite frankly, there are many quality teachers in this school. The new principal is clearly steering students and staff in a new direction that not only leads to success with testing but with learning in post-secondary institutions.

Come visit us! I've been teaching at Uni for six years. Test scores are one thing but going into the classrooms for visits is another. I encourage all parents and community members to come to Uni and see the rigorous instruction that occurs - every day. Unless you've see a teacher in action, you don't know much about a school. Best of luck in finding the right match for you and your family!

The SAS program, or honor classes at this school is very diverse and challenging. Not only are the classes fulfilling, my daughter says that the students at this school are very accepting and there's a lot of healthful competition between the rival school, Palisades HS.

Not only does Univeristy HS offer a variety of challenging honor (SAS program) and AP classes, my daughter (freshman) is involved in several clubs and sport teams offered at this school. I highly recommend the SAS program at this school because the students there are very diverse and there's a lot of competition between the rival school, Palisades HS.

As a student at University HS, I really find the experience here at Uni to be enriching; all the teachers and students are very accepting and friendly. I'm in SAS so the classes are more rigorous and the teachers push you a lot. Plus, it's a really safe school, we barely have any fights here, probably because it's a really diverse school.

University High School has a very unique history, with several graduates returning to teach, and many teachers pursuing their education to achieve a masters degrees or higher says a lot about the quality staff at University High School. Students have many opportunities for leadership. The diversity of clubs and extra curricular activities that students can take part in give students balance. Coaches here understand that need and work with students so they can do all the things that they are interested in. Students want to feel safe as much as the administration wants to keep the school safe, so they work together to try to handle confrontations before they get out of hand. An example of this is the peer mediation class that teaches students how to help other students with their personal issues. Parent involvement is getting better. The school website and teacher emails should help facilitate better communication.

I'M NOT A PARENT- FORMER STUDENT: When I attended University High School, I felt the school was a very good one. Other than that, and the fact that we aren't that great in sports, University fairs well amongst Senior High Schools in the region. I graduated and am currently in college...I made it! and I have a 3.6 GPA as of today. There were some great teachers there...and some I would say had no business teaching there.

The school location is great, kind of hidden away. The academics are good but I was a little disappointed when my daughter couldn't get the help she needed when she struggled with geometry. Its a shame the test scores went down which made the school ineligible to receive incoming bussed students. The college prep AVID program is fantastic. I wish they had AVID when I was in high school. As for the social atmosphere, my daughter's number of friends was somewhat limited because she wasn't a nerd, or into goth/punk-rock, gangs or being fake. She couldn't wait for the school year to be over so she could transfer to another school. But overall, it was a good learning experience for her.

My senior is well-prepared for college. I believe the theater arts department is one of the best in the district, if not the best! The amount of support provided to parents for students who need more help is lacking. There is very little communication between teachers and parents, which is the key to student success!

Academics are good, all los angeles district schools are overcrowded. My son had some pretty good teachers. Basketball team is not that great, need help.

I believe this school is a very good one. The area is great and I used to go there. The educaton is very intense. One of the things I liked about it was the copernican schedule they had, where the classes where an hour and a half long but you could really learn about any given course then the fact that you could be out by 1:30 p.m. and head to work was even better. The staff is very friendly. The school was always clean. The teachers have alot to offer. A teacher that retired was one of my favorites, Mr. Arnold Rubinoff who was back then in charge of the photography class great teaching material! This school will always hold my high regards.

Excellent school, diverse backgrounds, nice side of town.

It is an average school. Parents have to make the effort for their kids to take advantage of teacher's help. If you, as a parent, don't care, teachers won't either. That's life. Don't complain later about the school. All the kids have about the same choices coming in, and parents too. Make bad choices and you will get bad results. Work hard, push your kid, ask questions, demand appointments, set limits and it will be ok. Be 'cool and relaxed' and you will also get those results, 'BAD'.

School with a great history but has become a sub par school. Too many kids bussed in, not enough neighborhood kids. Usually starts the year underenrolled so that kids who enroll late a schools that have reached capacity are diverted to uni. Has a strong older faculty especially in the AP classes but the ap program has steadily gotten worse. Administration is fair at best. Extra curricular programs are poor not well supported.

Their Literacy Coach is amazing and has really galvanized the entire school. Teachers are not working in isolation so much. The old teachers are retiring, thank goodness.
