Richland Avenue Elementary School Reviews

Our daughter started off at this school, back in 2006 in the Pre-K program. We LOVED it! Mrs. Yamaguchi, is a great teacher! I contribute the wonderfull program to my daughters success through 2nd grade! We didn't stay at Richland because we moved, but we even thought about commuting this year to have our other daughter, who is 4 now, attend!! We really miss it there!

Excellent teachers and staff, they are all so hardworking and dedicated to the children. FREE after school STAR program until 6pm!

Richland is a small school, and the students are wonderful! The upper grade students regularly interact with the primary grade students and it makes for a great experience for all. The administration is very open to input from parents, and the teaching staff is dedicated. The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and we are making great leaps and bounds in our API.

Richland Avenue School is a great little school with a lot of parent/teacher involvement.

I love that the class sizes aren't crowded. And the teachers are fabulous! It is very easy to communicate with them, and they actually respond quickly. (Not so at our previous school.) The after school programs are great - though the kids tend to play rather than do their homework. But that's ok because they're active. There is a lot of parental support and activity. This has been evident more so this year with the budget cut-backs. All in all it's a great experience for the kids and the parents alike.

Because of the enthusiasm of the teachers -- and the parents -- and the wonderful afterscool activities for the students. . . .

Richland Avenue School is a wonderful school to work at, the staff are great people and the children are fantastic. We have a very active Parent Booster Club that works really hard. We have a fantastic Haunted House created by talented aides and parents. The atmosphere is friendly and the teachers are all cooperative!

My son is in the Preschool program here and the teachers are so terrific! There have been between 12-16 kids in the class this year but they have 2 teachers and at least 2 additional qualified assistants in the class at all times. The children in the class have been so sweet and the parents seem very involved. The principals seem very invested in the school as well and my son has learned so much and has a great time! we will keep him in the kindergarten and report back next year on his progress. So far, so good!

My child graduated from Richland and went on to a Charter school and I was excited to find out that she learned so much at Richland that she was ahead of her class in every way. Although other students were struggling, she seemed to be well organized and confident that she could do the work and she did. I am grateful that she hadf this experience.

Richland is a small, family oriented school. The kids learn well and appreciate the parent, teacher relationships. Richland is GROWING in all positive directions. Schools should not be based on test scores or teaching kids to the tests, Richland gives more to make kids care about their education and feel appreciated.

I have to admit that before I enrolled my son into the Kindergarten class, I had my doubts about the school. Being from the neighborhood, I saw what the school was like just 3 years ago. And while this school is walking distance for us, I was ready to drive my child to another school. HOWEVER, any of my doubts have disappeared. The school has a new principal and a staff that is very friendly and inviting to listening to parents' suggestions. My child loves his kindergarten class. He looks forward to Friday Music classes and more importantly, enjoys going to school. I would definitely recommend Richland to all new families.

I have been very pleased with my daughter's Kindergarten experience at Richland. Her teacher is excellent, caring and in control of the classroom. My daughter comes home singing songs she has learned at school. She has art lessons, music time, and a library visit weekly. The library is beautiful, the playground equipment is new, the garden a unique learning experience. There is a brand new salad bar in the cafeteria. The new principal is working hard to institute programs to reward positive behavior. I am very happy with the parental involvement in my daughter's class and the school in general. Since it is a small school your voice is heard and your involvement is felt. A lot of improvements have been made at this school and the API score went up a great deal this past year. If you are a neighbor you should definitely come by and see for yourself.

I love the school. My daughter is in her 2 second week at this school and just loves it. Her teacher is really nice and the staff are very helpful and the principal is on the ball with everything.

This is the great little school that could. There is so much going for it and it seems to have turned a corner. A friendly atmosphere, lots of space, organic garden, beautiful library, mobile computer lab, and all the parent involvement is really showing. Scores are way up, the STAR program is great. We're excited to be here.

Richland is a wonderful school! My son's first grade teacher is magnificent and has helped him tremendously. The STAR after school program also contributed to my son's perfect straight 4's on his report card. The atmosphere at Richland is pleasant and the warmth is genuine.

I am very pleased with my son's kindergarten experience. His teacher is wonderful, caring, and challenges him everyday! I am concerned about the API scores, but hopefully there will be as sharp of an increase as there was a decrease in 2007.

Numerous additions have made this campus very pleasant. New murals adorn previously blank walls. Previous patches of dirt now have tree saplings, and other plantings. Most noticably, the expanse of pavement, previously without destination, now has a new playground apparatus. The almost 1 acre school garden was dorment. It is now utilized for the annual school picnic, and has become a focus of activity. There is a revived momentum towards a better school environment. My son has achieved in all facets of school curriculum. Each of his teachers has been confident, has controlled the classroom, and has respected both the students and parents. All are aspects that my son will learn as a result.

Richland needs more music and art programs. This is important for children to excel in learning. Parent involvement is okay. It could be a lot better if they held meetings at times that working parents could attend. Parent committee caters to stay at home moms.

This is our son's third year at Richland and he's having a great experience there. It's a small little gem of a school with a big heart.

Richland has such great potential. The 1 acre garden, once utilized appropriately, can be an amazing asset for learning. We have an Arts grant that allows for special Drama, Dance and Music instructors. The class sizes are small, guaranteeing attention to those who excel or need extra help. Fundraising is difficult and extras costs money. It's a quaint, neighborhood school that just needs more neighborhood kids and parents willing to participate.

My son goes to their kindergarten and receives services such as speech and occupational therapy. The teachers are great and really care about the children. The staff really cater to the needs of the children and show so much love to my son. It's a small school with committed teachers and a close knit family environment.

My son attends pre-school collaborative program. There are 2 teachers and 2 teaching assistants. All are very experienced and wonderful with the children. Fun activities are actually educational. Children are taught routines. The classroom is big and happily decorated with a pretend-play area. There is a large yard with a mini-garden. Parent volunteers help in preparing materials for the classroom. Reading with child is required daily. Homework with basic concepts. Academics - counting, calendar, letters, writing. All in all a happy classroom with great teachers and teaching assistants.

The school has deteriorated since the current principal arrived three years ago. The sense of close community that used to be present at RAS is absent.

The school is developing the one acre garden into a area of learning for science and art. The principal of this school is not responcsive to nor respects the staff and parents of this school. But inspite of the principal, the school is really friendly for children and parents, embracing our differences, Richland is developing a more 'hands on' parent group who support the teachers and staff, to further enrich the entire student bodies learning experience.
