Overland Avenue Elementary School Reviews

My son just graduated in June from this amazing school. Yes, I agree with the positive comments here about this school. The teachers are the best teachers I have encountered within one school. I am extremely thankful for the parent involvememnt, since I am a working parent and was not able to be involved as much. We will miss all of the teachers and the STAR program atff was incredible! The principal needs to lighten up on the kids and teachers, and make this a more fun environment for all. Life is way too short not to laugh! Thank you Overland for all the memories!

You are crazy not to send your kids to Overland. This is a fabulous school with wonderful families and great teachers. The teachers are very caring and responsive to the diverse needs of the student body. We love the school! Students who graduate go on to great middle schools both public and private. The students that go public often attend magnet programs. You could not ask for a better elementary school in Los Angeles. Go Overland!

I am so glad my child finally graduated from here. Principal Born, v.p. Choe and the rest of the faculty are great. But having to deal these last 6 years with some of the rude, pompous, snobby, arrogent, parents has been hell!! As one parent posted earlier they have this 'one of us' attitude and their children are just as bad. They do not respect or embrace deversity, I am half white and the only time they even spoke to me was when we had candy sales to raise funds and I was one of the largest sellers. After that I became one of the peon's again to which I am proud to be. the funny thing is I am actually much more wealthy than many of them, but the only difference is I don't try to fluant it or think I am better because I appear to be white.

The school is a mixed bag. Fundraising efforts are high, so there is the ability to supplement LAUSD funds and provide additional resources, and there are many active PTA moms that contribute greatly to the school. The teachers are great overall, and there is a great after school program on site. That said, there is a pervasive exclusionary attitude of anyone not 'one of us' (read white, affluent, and living on a 'nicer' nearby street). The tracking done here creates a hierarchy among student peers which is detrimental. The general lack of respect and understanding of a diverse student body is a shame, besmirching the school's reputation, and deters some from attending.

Great teachers and amazing parent involvement, a definite recipe for success. We moved here two years ago just so we could send our children here. We have not regretted our decision and feel that the level of education here has far surpassed the private school our children attended previously.

Overland is a great elementary school. The facility is wonderful and the teachers are very friendly and concerned about our children's education and well being. The Principal is relatively new to her position but has done a fantastic job with turning this school into a first rate school in a relatively short period of time. She has brought on a team of assistants that are very attentative to the students needs and put the student's education and development first. We are very lucky and fortunate to have such a wonderful community school in our neighborhood. I'm very proud the staff, teachers and administrators of our school.

The school's fabulous. Great teachers and high parental involvement. It's just been acknowledged as a 'California Distinguished School!' My son's in Kindergarten and flourishing. Best news is that we walk to school daily.

Bottom Line: Parent/Teacher communications make this school fabulous for kids -- both their educational achievement and social development (which are NOT connected). Administration is un-imaginative, duplicitous, self-serving, and scared. Hopefully, the Principal and V-P will either get their act together, or take it 'on the road' in the next few years, and Overland can get back to being the incubator for fabulous programs it has been for 20 years, or at least 'fly under the radar' to quote an official who really shoud sell socks instead of education.

I was a student of this exceptional school.I switched to this school at the start of 2nd grade. At first I was overwhelemed, but i found my greatest friends and my parents are fine with me going out with my friends. All this because their family values were very much like ours. In the 4th grade all students perform a Snoopy play with the wonderful drama teacher Miss. Liza. In the 5th, each year the students do a different play. My best ... I must say the school's most valued teacher is a 4th grade teacher. She not only inriches them in Mathematics, but also she cares very much about the students' welfare and happy social activity. All the teachers have helped me so very much to become what I am today. In all the schools in the world I can't say that one school could better care about everyone more.

I am a parent of this school and think the teachers are exceptional and the parent involvement is like no other.

My older one is entering 4th and my younger is enter 2nd. We all love this school. Great parent involvement as well as a great after school (Star) program. Our only regret is you have to move on after 5th grade.

Excellent teacher and parent commitment at a public school that feels like a private one. A wide range of extracurricular activities/programs available. Diverse student body and safe campus. Childcare available through Star. High test scores. Only negative is the principal who needs to work on interpersonal skills.

Our daughter is finishing Kindergarten and we could not be more pleased. The parents are very involved in school activities which boosts the level of student participation even higher. The projects worked on during the day, the after school activities and everything sh eis learning surpassed our expectations for an LAUSD school.

Nice school, good teachers

An excellent school. They provide many opportunities for student achievment and improvement. Great parent involvement!

A strong school with a lot of parent involvement. Wonderful after care program.

We moved from a private to public school, and were concerned about the decision. That was two years ago, and to this date, we are very happy with Overland. The schools population is very diverse, and the quality of the program met our satisfaction. The school's leadership is always looking for ways to improve, not just the quality of education, but the quality & availability of the extracurricular activities. Parent involvement is serious, and is very influential. All of my daughters' teachers have been attentive to her needs and very creative in the classroom overall. Her test scores accurately reflected her ability in the classroom - and as with any public school, it is also our responsibility as parents to follow-through to help accelerate their performance in school. Our experience has been positive, and there are no regrets.

Overland is a public school that feels like a private school. The kids are proud to be students here, the parents are involved in decision-making, fundraising, volunteering in the classroom and at parent-sponsored events. The teachers are responsive and accessible to parents and take great pride in what they do, including taking part in further education towards the now-acheived goal of becoming a 'school for advanced studies.' A student orchestra, p.e., arts, library, music, drama, gardening and computer lab are some of the enriching activities kids have access to -- many of which are funded through the parent group. And, it's a manageable size and a campus that is constantly being beautified through administration and parent efforts.

This is a wonderful school that really encourages and appreciates parent involvement. Students can participate in afterschool programs as well as participate in some arts programs that are held during the school day. It is a culturally diverse school that shares and celebrates holidays with everyone. The feeling at this school is similar to the feeling I had when I went to elementary school. I was lucky enough to work at the school as an aide when I went back to grad school to become a teacher! It was a wonderful experience!

Great school, hard to get in.

My twin boys have attended Overland Avenue School for 3 years. It is a great school with a very high level of parent involvement.

My daughter started Overland 2nd Grade. She was attending a private school before this. She has flourished much better here. The spirit in the school is unbelievable and there is a lot of parent involvment. So far the teachers I have encountered have been very open and warm. All in all we are having a wonderful experience at Overland and I would whole-heartedly recommend the school. It will be great if we can get the Academia scores up to match other schools in the near vicinity.

This School has an excellent faculty and great parent body. They are very involved and this makes a real difference to the quality of the programs there.

Good school. My son who is now in college attended this school. We both found it to be quite satifactory and above adequate.

Fantastic school academically. Wonderful, caring teachers. Too much parent involvement.

Great school. Diversified population, but well rooted for a Westside community. New Principal is excellent -- great communication skills and works very collaboratively with all parent groups. Parents are extremely involved. 'Booster' organization raise $200,000 per year that pays for teacher's aides, music/drama program and more!

Our 5th and 2d grade children have attended this school since kindergarten. We moved here to attend the school, based largely on its API and other scores (at the time, we had nothing else to go on). We have been very involved parents, both in the classrooms and on various committees. The school's biggest assets are a terrific group of teachers and a very involved group of parents. We have been involved in a long struggle to make sure our kids are receiving appropriate academic challenges, with only partial success. We are concerned about the school's direction, since we have a new principal - we are hoping for the best, but some of the early indications cause concern.

Our sons spend kindergarden in a private school, we were always a little hesitant about public schools (being from Europe a lot of 'rumors' are heard about US private schools, not good ones either). After a year in private school, and still no progress in our boys reading/writing skills, plus a lot of teasing issues, we decided to take the chance and bring them to Overland School (we got a lot of positive feedback from friends with kids at Overland), and we can not give enough praise! After only a year at Overland both of them are at or above class level in their writing/reading skills, their selfconfidence has sky rocketed and they are actually eager to go to school in the morning...what else can a parent wish for?

My daughter is in kindergarten here. She had spent two years in a private pre-school for a lot of money. at Overland, she is very happy, and is exposed to a wider range of children, something lacking in the private school. The teachers are very dedicated, and most helpful to all children. I volunteer at the school, and interact with many of them. I have a lot of praise for their performance. Overall, I feel this is a well rounded school, offering a great educational experience. Compared to other schools, there are many male teachers here, which I believe is a plus. The STAR program is a great feature of the school.

The overall quality of education at Overland is dropping although the teachers remain dedicated. Parent involvement remains consistent and is one of the school's strong points. Lack of discipline is an issue -- administrative leadership, especially on this issue, remains weak. The new SAS program, established in less than three months, so far has no substance and has led to haphazard formation of classes. This school has far to go to recapture what it had!

My son completed kindergarten and he had a great year; a wonderful teacher and very nice teachers aide. There was a lot of parent involvement. A real sense of community spirit. The kids got along well too. A nice bunch of people all around. The after school STAR program is fantastic. Much opportunity for enrichment classes. My son took circus arts, ceramics, woodworking, computer internet, music theater and cooking. These are a few of the options. It was really great! On the down side the school could use improvement accomodating the higer achieving kids. To this end the principal is working hard to institute the SAS program at Overland (it will start next fall). We will see how the SAS program evolves.
