Hancock Park Elementary School Reviews

Hancock Park school is great in every respect! The staff, administration, parent and especially the kids make this place amazing!

HPE is the most incredible school. My daughter is in first grade and her experience has been nothing short of wonderful. I am thrilled with what the Principal and teachers are able to do with a limited budget. The parent community is strong and everyone works together. The resources are limited, certainly, but dedication of all involved is very strong. The teachers meet regularly to discuss how to improve their teaching. My daughter has her regular class plus art, science and social studies. Quite impressive for a LAUSD school!

High test scores, but not much fun for the kids, it's work-work-work. Tons of homework. Extra-curriculars cost extra money and run by outside company. Afterschool teacher-supervised homework time is so expensive, but if you are working there is no other way for your kids to get the tons of homework done. It puts them at a desk from 8:10 - 4:30 daily...and we wonder why our kids become obese? I think it needs some balance. Teachers and staff are very nice, but I'd like to see more well-rounded education.

My son justed started at Hancock and I must say that the teacher and the staff have been simply wonderful. I must say, however, that I just had an interesting experience. I went to volunteer and was asked to make copies. Haven't made copies in so long, I asked principal if anyone would be able to help me. She directed one of the staff members to do it, which I was grateful for. What chuckled me, however, was that the staff told me straight out that the person I just spoke with is THE principal and that she 'doesn't make copies.' I later confirmed that the principal is actually very down to earth and incredibly supportive, but I just want to reiterate that the last thing you want to tell volunteers is that they are there to perform lowly jobs.

We pulled our son out after 1 month at Hancock Park. The homework was too difficult for where he was developmentally. We spoke with the teacher, principle, and vice-principle prior to making our decision. I believe everyone there means well, but they are clearly pushing academics. My sense is that the school administration is very invested in scoring well on the standardized tests. The problem, of course, is that they are pushing children too hard, and some kids can't handle it and it erodes their self esteem. They expect children to know how to write all of their ABCs and 123s prior to going to Kindergarten. Our son went to an excellent preschool, but they did not emphasize academics, but rather brain building and problem solving types of activities. Ultimately, we sent him to a much smaller Catholic School where he has adjusted nicely.

School makes homework a priority. If they don't have time to cover material in class, they assign as homework. With both parents working, it is a problem. We also pay for expensive after school homework supervision, but still homework is often not finished. I think it is out of balance, I would prefer to pay the money for enrichment or sports activities. They may get good test scores, but at what cost? Teachers are nice, principal pleasant. It's a matter of balance, I suppose, and I wish more emphasis on well-rounded child and good citizenship.

I think Hancock park is a great school! im an 9th grader at a very good school in big bear, and I've come so far just because of this school! I've progressed so much! Yes, they did give a lot of homework, but look where its taken ME, i have AP classes in high school, and this is only my freshman year. TH

California Distinguished School! Less than 5 % of schools in California receive this honor . . . and there's a reason why . . . great teachers, staff, and parents . . . re-defined homework policy prepares kids for the rigorous middle and high school years . . . principal strives to keep art, music, and technology thriving . . . active booster club raises money for supplemental enrichment activities . . . each classroom has a laptop & projector for easier technology access . . .after-school homework helper and enrichment activities are affordable and well-supervised . . . always a wait list for kindergarten students to join the school because of its amazing reputation . . . relax! You're at home at hancock park school!

MY CHILD HAS EXCELLED THIS PAST SCHOOL YEAR. ALISON STOTHARD AND KATE MACKIE WERE AMAZING!

I'm so disappointed. My child is bright, 'gifted'. Went from enjoying school to hating every day in 5th grade. Previous review re: homework is accurate! I've never seen such an obscene amount of homework. It's as though they throw whatever they cannot get to (in class) as homework. Their homework policy is to be 'flexible' if it becomes too burdensome. Well, I asked for some waivers, and my child was penalized with lower grades specifically because of homework! Also being belittled in class for incomplete homework. I signed up for very expensive homework supervision, and still it is too much. So stressed, and derived no benefit from the homework. There is no free sports activities either. They subscribed to a computer program (Renzulli) for gifted kids, but never used it!!! My poor child was so sad every day, we're glad to be going somewhere else!

My child was in Special Ed. and Mrs. Graham is 'The Best Teacher' she has ever had...Taught her to read, math single double, triplle digits addition , subtraction she excelled in that school with Jackie her assistant. Do you want your child to learn and be taught to understand?...then this is the school. Excellent teaching skills you will be amazed. I wish she could have stayed there as John Burroughs wasn't so good, what a waste of 3 years there.

I am a proud parent of 2 children at Hancock Park School. My second grader entered from a different school just this year. We had a tough few months at the beginning. He ran out of class, threw things in class, and was just totally frustrated. With the help of the Administration, teacher, RSP teacher, and other parents that I talked to, we ot hom the help that he needed. He's now at grade level and LOVES Hancock Park. He loves to write and knows that he is doing a great job. I owe Hancock Park for making my son a happy kid again and for contributing to our peaceful and joyfilled home life.

As a parent of a current 2nd grade student at Hancock Park Elementary, I have nothing but positive things to say about this school. It offers a rigorous academic curriculum, and although, I'll agree that there is sometimes too much homework, I believe that this is an important aspect of what makes this school so special, in that they are laying a strong foundation for what lies ahead for our children. I mean, who in their right mind believes that it will get any easier as a child moves forward in their education? Moreover, if you do, then you should take some time to re-evaluate what you want your child to get out of an education to begin with. Thus, if you are a parent that is concerned about having your child receive a decent education within LAUSD's broken system, then you could not choose a better school.

Previous parents are correct. My daughter never goes to computer class, they have no computer teacher. Classroom teacher does not take them. I went to computer room, and only 12 older machines working, so how could a class of 22 use them anyway, with no teacher-helper? TONS and TONS of useless homework, TOO MUCH, kids cannot just play after school (this is NOT college, after all, this is elementary school). After school child care costs a fortune, then the homework does not get done! Summer day camp is astrononmical costing if you factor in 'before-9AM' and 'after-4PM' child care, so no options there. Sits in school and after-school-care from 8AM-4:30PM, at age 8. Not a fun place for kids, and my daughter is pretty smart girl!

The previous review was inaccurate, there is no full-time computer teacher. She left last year and has not been replaced. Each teacher conducts their own computer class, half don't work, although there are other teachers to help out. Overall, good school, wonderful principal. Far too much homework in every grade level. Most of this homework is not constructive, busy-work, meaningless. If both parents work, you will have to pay for expensive after-school on-site supervision to get homework done (often not done). Only 'free' program is Beyond the Bell, which provides a yard supervisor to keep eye on kids playing. Children have to sit at outdoor lunch benches to do homework, on their own, while other kids are playing. Library is sometimes open after-school, for a place to sit, until 4:00, but seems to be closed often for one reason or another). No actual homework 'assistance'-homework a big & common problem.

Our child started kindergarten this year at HPE. We are thrilled with what we have seen to date. The instruction she is receiving is excellent Her teacher has created a nurturing learning environment. The school has a very involved booster club which has provided new playground equipment, a full-time math coordinator and full time computer lab teacher.

I have to agree with some of the other reviewers that while this school does have some excellent programs, the emphasis is on homework and testing rather than thoughtful learning and citizenship. I am also unhappy with the choice of either ridiculously expensive after-school care or none at all and I am tired of being condescended to by teachers who care more about turning my child into some kind of homework robot than actually nurturing his unique abilities.

This is the best school! The teachers are amazing and there is great parental involvement. It is diverse and high-achieving. What else could you want?

This is an excellent school. From the Principal, to the teachers, it is apparent that everyone has one goal: do what is best for the children. I highly recommend this school. It's the best!

This school has positives and negatives. I think the October 15th post is very true and thoughtful. I can't add anything to this, except this school is very good at high achievers and slow learners. My daughter, by their standards an average to poor learner, cannot get the individual help she needs, since there are so many non-English speaking students, they get the priority, as well as advanced learners. A lot of parents I know have this same problem, and no good way to deal with it. Also, the emphasis on homework is a heavy burden. The disrepair, lack of oversight on the playground after school, and poor facilities make negotiating this school somewhat difficult for my 7 year old.

No school is perfect - and contrary to the positive reviews written here - this school is certainly no exception. The true test of a great school is the long-term benefits it has on a child. As a parent of a child who previously attended this school, I can state that the overall level of education my child received was below standard. It has had a long-term detrimental effect on my child's academic success. The teachers and administration ignored the warning signs that my child was at risk. Now my child is in a school where the teachers and administration communicate with us on a regular basis and don't 'sugar-coat' our child's efforts and performance. Our child is struggling to keep up with the rest of the class. This is a student that the teachers and staff Hancock Park Elementary School previously praised and gave high marks. Hmmm......????

I love this school! The parents participate, the teachers are enthusiastic and knowledgeable, the staff is helpful, and the vibe is nurturing. The principal is friendly, yet professional, the vice principal is great at her job, and the after school curriculum is diverse. In addition to the basic subjects, I love that my child is being exposed to art, music, science, (and in 3rd grade, dance and drama) in a very positive way. With only a couple of exceptions the teaching staff is exceptional. I am impressed by the innovative techniques used to encourage learning. The playground is large, and booster club is doing what it can to beautify the grounds, with several trees, shrubs, and other greenery being added.

Hancock Park has a wonderful diversity of students and enthusiastic teachers. The principal and the assistant principal are very committed and parents are very involved. The quality of the teachers is better than some private schools. Our daughter is in the first grade and so far she has received a great experience academically and socially.

Aloha! I have to echo with what Ms. Garcia has said. Hancock Park is an amazing school. We have amazing parents, faculty, and staff members who work together to ensure our students are prepared for their learning journey. With supervision provided both before and after school, along with an array of extra-curricular activities (like rock climbing!), Hancock Park School educates the whole child ~ we teach art, social studies, science, P.E. . . . the whole spectrum! Our principal works very closely with parents and teachers to make our campus safe and beneficial for our children. Our teachers are passionate about education and it shows. I am so happy to be teaching at my school! Mahalo!

Hancock Park is truly a place for your children to thrive! All teachers work closely at each grade level to provide a consistent, challenging curriculum for all students. The school is very diverse, as is the staff. Students are provided with a well rounded curriculum including social studies, science, art, health, p.e. at all grade levels, which is hard to find at many elem. schools. Safe, supervised environment after school and great activities to keep your little ones interested and entertained! I love my school! Ms.Garcia ~ 2nd grade teacher-Hancock Park

Child is in Kindergarten program. Teacher is very patient and interested in the well-being of all the students. Parents are very involved. It is a high quality school.

This is a great elementary school. The teachers and great, hence the high api test scores. I recommend this school.

Hancock Park School is an Arts Prototype School. Students experience a creative and academically rigorous curriculum. Teachers at Hancock Park are highly qualified as are the administrators. Included among the teaching staff are published authors, teachers holding Master's Degrees, and a National Board Certified Teacher. The principal holds an Educational Doctorate. Parents, students, teachers, classified staff, and administrators cooperate in a highly collaborative environment. Several grade levels team teach P.E. on a weekly basis. Fifth grade teachers, for example, team-teach P.E. every Tuesday from 12:45pm to 1:30pm. Along with many other grade levels, fifth grade students start each day with twenty minutes of exercise. In preparation for the Physical Fitness Exam, fifth graders warm-up, stretch, power-walk and jog their way toward a one-mile run, (goal). Hancock Park School is a place where parents, students, teachers, and administrators take pride in their achievements while adhering to state and national standards.

This is a remarkable public elementary school with caring teachers, committed parents and an excellenet principal in Dr. Judy Perez. Recent budget cuts have been hard, but this school (largely because of parent support) still manages to provide instrumental music, a chorus, glee club, beautiful new library facility for the kids. The arts are alive and well at Hancock Park!

The school should improve its safty and discipline training.

I love this school. One of the last good public schools! The principal could be more involved, but the assistant principal is really on the ball!

Hancock park has many issues! There is poor coordination among office staff and teachers. Often the kids are exposed to a curriculum that is not conducive to learning. The principal is 'power hungry' and is known to overstep her staff's recommendations to position her point of view. The parents are wonderful and heavily involved with a pta. The teaching staff is unbalanced! Some of the teachers are great while others leave you scratching your head as to how and why they became educators. The playground is big. The recess oversight staff constantly uses poor judgement when dealing with issues as they arise. Hancock park scores are very high in academics but there are many risks to attending this school and your child could regress socially and academically.

I have all great things to say about the school, and if you are trying to decide whether private or public school is best for your child, I would highly recommend Hancock Park School. The principal, teachers, staff and school environment is the best you will find. And, lot's of parent involvement and a great network of friends. I become involved in the school while my daughter was in Kindergarten, working in the classroom and as a member of the Booster Club. I can contribute directly to my childs education and it is very fulfilling for me and my daughter.

The parent involvement is phenomenal; that combined with the exceptional care from the teachers and principal , make it a uniquely outstanding school in the community. The workload is challenging and it can be very academic, but there are opportunities for artistic expression and experience (music, dance, art.)

Hancock park school is extremely difficult for your child to enter. The office staff are extremely secretive when asked information regarding permits. The school is extremely diverse in its ethnicity and has scored well on thier academinc performance index.

Compare to my son's old school, I think this school was great. My son transfer to this school before fifth grade, and I was very happy I did. The teacher gave him homework , gave him books (which his old school never did) and really tried to work with my son and I regards to his education. The only thing is the principal was never visable. She could careless about meeting parents. And I loved the people who watched the kids afterschool, I felt very safe and they always knew where my son was.

This is a very fine public school with stron diversity but high academic standards. A decent parental involvement level but only sporadic extra-curricular activities. Best for the Korean-American kids, approx. 50% of intake, who generally apply themselves well and are model students. Not as insular as some other close public shcools which are 75% K-A and it is hard to find an English speaker in the office.

Its a wonderful school for academics in the neighborhood. Their after school program needs improvement.

Great school with amazing stats.

An excellent public school with a nice diverse mix of kids. Good teachers and involved parents. Could use more programs, but there are a lot of after school activities. Friendly people!

This is a very good school. The Principal is very hands on and makes an effort to meet with parents. I have actually met with her one on one and was given an improptu tour of classrooms with her. There are some fantastic teachers in the lower grades. Teachers at each grade level collaborate to develop the basic lesson plan that will encompass core curriculum. Each teacher applies their own teaching style to the mutually agreed upon plans. I do not have knowledge of the upper level grades yet. There is also a very active Booster Club that has had a good degree of success in fundraising and provding significant improvements to the school. They also run afterschool enrichment program classes that are above average. Need a better afterschool tutoring option here though.

Great test scores in an urban setting. Difficult to do, but this school seems to have the right balance.

My husband and I toured the school by ourselves. The principal wouldn't give us the time of day. The classes we observed were very inconsistent. One looked very academic and one very remedial and one very crowded and chaotic. We asked if students were grouped by ability because that was how it appeared, but they claimed it was all 'random.' We don't like the idea of our children's education being so random. Also, the school administration was not very welcoming. Didn't seem to care what we thought of the school.

My daughter have been at Hancock since grade K. The teachers have professional, educational and personal experience enough to do a great job working with the children. The school enrichement programs are very good. It's easier to keep up with the child extra curricular activities, when you can count with it at the school. There are such a variety of classes (ballet, painting, karate, music, cooking classes and much more)that is even hard to choose wich one is the most interesting. Hancock Park is an example of good caring, good work and competency in a public school. Actually we moved out to Texas, and my daughter is a second grader in another very good school. She is a honor student at the new school, and I believe that part of the credit, has to be given to the quality and caring os those professionals at Hancock.

Hancock Park is a very good school. I am very pleased with the staff, the curricularim and the parental involvement. They have a great after school enrichment program. I am very pleased with the quality of work my daughter is given and feel she is in good hands when she is at school.

Although the class sizes are more than desirable the teachers are very involved. The are a number of alumni students and parents who are still involved in the school because there is a geniune concern for the progress of the students. The extracurricular activities are great with the addition of Drill Team and Enrichment classes. The teachers work hard to equip the kids for future success.

Both my children currently attend Hancock Park Elementary and have since they entered kindergarden. My oldest daughter is now in the 5th grade and has had an outstanding education. She has been fully challenged. Her teachers have always set high expectations and she has been exposed to a multitude of wonders both inside and out of the core curriculum. My youngest daughter is now in the 2nd grade and has had an equally challenging experience. Hancock Park staff and parents are thouroughly committed to the highest standards of acheievement and are always looking to better education for all of their children. I can only praise Hancock Park School for their brilliant teachings and fundamental experiences that I feel my children will carry with them throughout their lives. I highly recommend this gem of a school!

I visited this school recently and it seemed very nice. I met with the 2nd grade teacher who seemed very committed to her students and to the school overall. I aslo spoke with a mobile music teacher who also sang the praises of the school and principle.
