Has a great community feel, love the teachers, and the after school program is pretty awesome.

The after school activities are extraordinary and the level of parent interest, involvement, energy, and creative in support of the school and its mission is overwhelming.

A lovely, hardworking and responsive principal who is always available and happy to hear from or speak with parents. Great teachers who make the kindergarten classes feel like extended family, and who are able to simultaneously abide by the dogmatic district-wide curriculum while still keeping things fun, interesting and surprising for the kids. Amazing and very affordable afterschool programs that give kids help with homework as well as arts and crafts, sports and performing arts. A wonderful, friendly, cohesive community of families who are involved in their kids' education, and who are willing and able to donate their time, energy and money to support the school. We're so fortunate to be living in the Franklin zone!

The teachers are great, the kids are great, the community is great. Although we live in Los Angeles, it makes me feel like we live in a small town.

Simply the best!!! Parents, principle, teachers, and staff work together as a one. Without this functional family many of our goals could not be reached. OUr teachers stay at Franklin for a very, very long time. They are committed to our children and to the community. WE LOVE FRANKLIN!!!!

Franklin is a great caring school. I wouldn't send my kids anywhere else.

Franklin Ave. Elementary is everything a parent wants for their childs school. From the principal, to the teachers, to the staff and of course to the parents, this group of people have only one thing on their minds; 'what do we have to do in order to help make our kids the best they can be.' And then they all go from there and do their best to make this happen. Franklin Ave. Elementary School is a real community helping each other grow and be better. My daughter is so lucky to live in 90027.

The Teachers are fabulous, the parents are committed to being involved as much as possible, and the wonderful Mrs Sasso is our headmistress steering this educational ship with care and respect for all.

Our school has teachers, staff and a Principal that really care... they are committed to creating a well-balanced child in all the traditional curriculum that our school's offer. They will also go that extra mile to introduce enhanced learning projects (that are being cut from our school's budget) to further the education of our children... Thank you Franklin!

Franklin has wonderful, caring teachers and is populated by a diverse and close-knit group of kids. A warm, creative, nurturing environment for all.

Great teachers and staff members.

Franklin Elementary really is the fulfillment of the long and rich history of how immigrants from all over the world have made Los Angeles the rich mosaic of cultures and how diversity can be embraced and nurtured through public education that is open to all. The teachers are experienced and innovative. There is great parent involvement. Finally, it boasts a model afterschool enrichment program that is accessible to all students and families who need it.

I have grown greatly dissappointed with the outlook at Franklin Elementary. Since the era of Dr. Verna Deautrive and Irene Kelly, the school has lost it's mission. Unhelpful leadership, shrinking artistic emphasis, non-functional accelerated programs for the gifted, and an 'inner-circle' atmosphere lead to parent and teacher apathy. With more emphasis on fund-raising, and non-transparency in our financial efforts, I see little hope that Franklin will improve. I don't plan to subject the rest of my children to this toxic environment.

Our son just graduated from Franklin and our daughter has the same teacher he had in kindergarten. The teachers are wonderful and take pride in their school - many of them showing up to the PTO meetings & getting involved in every fundraiser. A truly wonderful neighborhood school.

I love Franklin Avenue Elementary School for many reasons. One very important and special quality about the educational experience at Franklin is the school has always encouraged and included parent involvement in their children's education. We have an outstanding PTO and THE BEST teachers. Even during times when the LAUSD has budget cuts, our school & parents work together to ensure our students and teachers have the tools and materials they need.

My grandson goes to Franklin. His parents and I are all very happy and so is he. His teacher lets him move ahead of curriculum. He loves the after-school program. He has taken classes in woodshop, cooking, animals, and many other things. He has wonderful friends. The parents are very involved. He was in love with his kindergarten teacher and now with his first grade teacher. When I go to pick him up, he does not want to leave because he is having so much fun.

We have had nothing but wonderful experiences with Franklin. Our first grader came here after a private school kindergarten and we were nervous about the transition. His first grade teacher immediately scoped out his strengths and weaknesses and gave him the kind of attention I would have expected at a fancy private school. He is now thriving, feeling confident, and learning. The parents and the community have also been so active and welcoming. I can't help but notice that the only negative remarks about Franklin on this website are from 2005 and before. This school is a wonderful place.

This school is great! Our first grader has been there 2 months after coming from a private kindergarden and just loves the school and his teacher. The parents are SO involved that the school gets practically everything it needs. Even a full time nurse! We are lucky to live in this zone and houses in our area are still selling even in this economy because of this school which is a real plus.

What a great place I can't imagine why anyone who lives in this area would not go to this school. It's got the warmth of a nursery school. We have 2 kids there and they love it. We love it.

Our two children have become motivated, engaged learners at Franklin Avenue Elementary. The teachers are an outstanding, highly experienced group, who take time to consider each child's individual needs. There is a tremendous sense of community and pride at Franklin. The parent body works in concert with teachers and administrators to bring added value and breadth to the curriculum. Test scores continue to climb, while enrichment and programs grow in scope and popularity. Franklin's dynamic after school program is envied by other schools in the area. Franklin is an example of how small community schools can evolve and best serve the needs of local residents.

Franklin School is an amazing school where my child has thrived. The new principal, Mrs. Sasso, came in last year (2006) and has proven to be a great leader. The teachers are superb, respectful of their students and creative with the curriculum. The new teachers are mentored by the veterans, ensuring that Franklin will keep its good teacher culture. Most of all, it's a happy, stimulating learning environment for the kids. And their academic performance proves it!

We recently moved here from across the country and I have been pleasantly surprised! The teachers and parents are sooo involved and the principle, though new, is a very intuitive to the schools needs and listens. There are some parents who have put together an amazing after school program with various opportunities for your child to be a part of wether a play or guitar or cooking. The money the school raises during fundraiser is put to good use that you can tell is applied to where the students need it. I have been so touched by the caring parents and students here and there is such a tight community with in these school grounds! I would recommend this school for any child.... the opportunities to excel are boundless from academics to the arts and science and it is rewarding to attend such a loving school!

I'm so glad we won't have to spend $200,000 to educate our two kids before middle school. We are fortunate enough to have a very solid school in our neighborhood -- the teachers are veterans, the parent involvement is impressive, there is a palpable sense of community and a longstanding arts culture within the school.

We love Franklin. We have two children at the school. Most of the faculty have been at the school for years and the level of commitment from both staff and parents is outstanding. There is also a wonderful afterschool program with lots of enrichment classes, started by a parent. This is a lovely neighborhood school.

I disagree that Franklin is slipping. There's a new principal who seems to be off to a great start. Our daughter just started K and she's so happy. Her teacher Mrs. Kelly is a master teacher who is amazing -- kind, well organized, patient and creative. She keeps the kids very stimulated as well as calm. We've been impressed with the level of parent involvement. The afterschool program is wonderful. They have a homework club as well as classes. Our K student is taking cooking, mosaic tile making, marine biology! The school is a microcosm of the neighborhood -- lots of diversity (racial, cultural, socioeconomic). There's a real camaraderie, kindness and warmth to the school. Our daughter got into a charter school and I'm so glad we decided to stay local (we walk) and go to Franklin. The school is a gem!

I am an ex-teacher of Franklin Avenue Elementary School. I miss the school terribly. I moved back to the Northeast to be closer to family. Franklin Avenue teachers, students and families are what I miss most about California. The school is well rounded in all areas. The extra curricular activities involve parents, families and all community members. Well done.

Franklin is a small school site in a quiet residential neighborhood. The staff of dedicated teachers provides an excellent academically enriched program and there are wonderful after-school science and art programs available. Parent involvement is encoraged and the staff are responsive to parent's concerns.

My children's teachers have all been outstanding. There could be more parent volunteers, however, the parent group is strong and they work hard. There is a great art and music program in place. There is also a great afterschool program with homework help and enrichment classes. However, I am worried about the new principal and the way she is running the school. I'm not confident about her abilities or leadership skills.

The school has really good teachers and an active parent group. There seems to be a lot of fundraisers, however, the money raised does provide the students with enrichment...such as, field trips & supplemental art and music instruction (which the children really seem to enjoy). There is also curriculum support with programs in reading (Accelerated Reader) and science... among other things. Unfortunately the new leadership doesn't seem as strong as the previous administration, and that worries me. I'm concerned that the quality of the school is declining. Last year I would have given the Principal Leadership category a 5 ... this year I give it a 1.

The art program is outstanding, parent involvement high. Not so sure about the mathematics, and no opportunity for accelerated learning.

I attended Franklin almost 25 years ago so my knowledge is outdated; however, because I stayed in the area and remain familiar with many families who attended more recently, I have seen Franklin grow and improve tremendously.

Great school--good teachers, clean and safe facility. Great parent organization and events.

This school has been a big disappointment. It is probably fine for most kids, but our son needs accelerated learning opportunities which have not been available. Its outstanding art program dramatically deteriorated while my child was here, so that it is at best mediocre currently.
