I have often said that Fairburn is as good as it gets and all of the families there will know this once they move on to other bigger, less intimate schools where your child gets lost in the crowd. Fairburn delivers a first rate education close to home in a family/community atmosphere. Best of all it is a public school whose curriculum and teachers, staff, and administration could go up against the best of them, private or public, across the country. Fairburn has been delivering a stellar education for over eighty years in Westwood. I was lucky enough to have graduated from Fairburn back in the sixties and am thrilled and grateful to have our son there. It is a close-knit atmosphere that supports as well as stimulates your child continually. The parent community is highly involved. All of Fairburn's teachers are highly qualified, experienced, and dedicated. Fairburn's performance on the state tests is always outstanding but the educational focus goes beyond just teaching to the test. We are so fortunate to have a comprehensive approach to our children's education through computer, theatre arts, music appreciation, art, physical education, literature, science, and math programs. There are fabulous after-school programs, one of which allows our children to participate in a school orchestra from kindergarten. There is no question in my mind that starting with kindergarten, our children receive all of the educational, social, and ethical fundamentals that they will need to achieve whatever goals they shall seek in life. Moreover, happily, Fairburn instills in them a love for learning that will inspire them throughout life. Fairburn deserves to win!!!!!

Fairburn has been a great school for my child after our move from elsewhere in the state. The teacher is concerned about children and so is the school. LAUSD is fund distressed but Fairburn does a great job of collective education by fundraising and appropriating the funds to useful programs to children at all levels. The school makes my family happy and my child very happy! It needs to win, it deserves to win!!

What makes Fairburn special is the community - families, teachers and the administration. It is a small school that excels at the advancement of its students.

I am continually impressed with the teaching expertise at Fairburn, as well as the ability to cater to different types of kids, nationalities, etc. It's a very happy, tight-knit community and our family has felt welcome since the first day of kindergarten.

We have the best teachers in Fairburn! They teach our kids in a very inspiring and positive way.

To me, the most important thing about our community public elementary school, Fairburn, is the intermingling of cultures, a modern day microcosm of the American Melting Pot. The kids don't just learn, but live 'Unity through Diversity' as they are introduced to the many different cultures in our community simply by sharing a classroom together. Nonetheless, the faculty at Fairburn celebrates these various cultures and encourages the children to seek an understanding of differing beliefs and customs. I can think of no greater lessons for the future of our nation and our world.

My daughter has exceeded in all of her studies due to the amount of effort put in by the hard working staff as well as the motivating environment. She is excited for school every morning which is definitely odd for a young child and she enjoys the time she spends in Fairburn every day.

The best secret school. So small, so diverse and the best teachers. My child absloutely loves his school. I wish it would go all the way to university.
This review was posted by a parent.

Fairburn is a great school because it is small, has great committed teachers, has a 'stand up for the students' principal, and parents who are actively involved and care.

Good teachers, great parent involvement, but school tolerates really bad behavior from bullies that violate the rights of other children and puts them in harms way.
This review was posted by a parent.

The teachers, staff, kids and parents are great. My grandson is excelling in all his subjects and i believe it is due to the excellent teachers and positive reinforcement he receives. We are thrilled with this gem of a school.

I have been so happy with this school. The teachers are all excellent. They really are supportive to all the students and the kids seem to thrive in this environment. The parents are very involved and there is this rare small town community feel. It is a community effort to make this the best environment for the kids.

Despite the fact that we're getting less funding from LAUSD than just about any school out there, we have a great principal who has managed what resources she has very well, two dedicated parent bodies that do what they can to support her, and some of the best teachers in the city. The kids are not only learning - they're having fun doing it.

Fairburn creates life-long learners through its dedicated teachers, wonderful staff, supportive administrators, involved parents and amazing students!!!

Fairburn is an amazing school that provides kids with a wonderful environment to learn and explore. The staff is so dedicated and the families are a great support as well. We are lucky to be part of this wonderful school.

I love this school and it's principal. My kids are doing great and the parents are very involved. The only downside is the parents who are on the board of the booster club. They aren't very friendly and don't seem to be open to new ideas. Oh well, you can't have it all! Highly recommend this school.

Everyone in our community really cares to make Fairburn a terrific experience for our kids and families. The staff is incredibly dedicated and our kids know they are in a safe and enriching environment.

The school is great. My son is going into 1st grade and we decided not to move him to a private school because you are getting the same education at Fairburn. And, I agree with the previous post that the principal is the driving force behind its success. She cannot deal with individual needs or problems but does really well with the school as a whole and getting things done for the school.
This review was posted by a parent.

This school is a gem. And I must say that in contrast to what I read here, I think our Principal is the driving force behind the success of our school. She is passionate, knowledgeable and driven. She oversees a great group of teachers and deals effectively with the school board. My child is having a great educational experience.

I was a Fairburn parent for 4 years and had 2 kids there. We moved over the summer and I have to say that I appreciate Fairburn much more in retrospect than I did when my children were there. I don't think there is a whole lot of inspired learning that happens there and there is a great deal of emphasis on test scores. However, the classrooms are never chaotic, the kids are almost always respectful and there is an importance placed on learning by the families in attendance that is absent at our new school. And let me tell you, Mrs. Abramowitz may have her problems, but she is a saint compared to our new principal. It's all relative.
This review was posted by a parent.

I agree with the last review, Fairburn does need a little help. However, the help needs to come from parent volunteers. So many of the parents are open and available when it comes time to complain about an issue, but when something needs to be done...they are strangely absent. Nearly all school fundraisers are run by the same small group of parents, who volunteer their own time for the good of the school and its students. The students have a plethora of opportunities available to them including: music and computer classes, art/dance/theatre, and an outstanding P.E. program run by a great coach. The teachers are all very experienced, and the principal, although difficult to deal with at times, only wants the best for the school.
This review was posted by a parent.

Fairburn needs a lot of help! Test scores are great, but the enviroment for learning and building a community is toxic. Recently families have been pulling their kids for St. Pauls and other learning institutions -- we are joining them. I sincerly hope Fairburn can live up to it's neighboring schools like Warner and Westwood and the community can learn to work together in the interest of their kids!

As a former student,I loved it.Most teachers are very helpful and kind. The kids and parents are also wonderful. However the principal is just a nightmare.Overall it is a great school with huge potential.

My two daughters attended Fairburn. Overall, I'm very happy with the school - great parents, wonderful kids, cooperative and nurturing teachers, but the principal is ridiculous. She doesn't have any PR skills and doesn't know how to make relationships neither with kids nor with parents. She has her favorites who do things for her and keep her at school (they are usually on permit), but the most of the people are unhappy with her. My daughters never had any problems at school, so I never needed her help. My review is based only on 6 years presence at school. Anyhow, I would highly recommend Fairburn to everybody for the wonderful elementary school experience.

I am the parent of a child at Fairburn and am generally very happy with the school. The 'booster' club has done some nice things, but the 2 people running it are awful to deal with. They have completely alienated everyone on campus and many families who could and would do more will not participate. The principal is genrally very open and listens when you schedule an appointment and I have found her to be extremely reasonable and helpful. The teachers are amazing and it is a wonderful group of families at the school. Unfrotunatley, no one wants to be involved because of 2 women.

The school is great. The booster club has made many great improvements throughout the years, but is run primarily by a power hungry parent who is a control freak, and has alienated those that do not sing her praises. n pouts hedoes not always have everyone's best interhowever, has become

I'm a parent of a child who only attended Fairburn for 2 months because we were so disappointed in the school. My son was placed in a private school and we've been very happy with the new school. The particular teacher that my son had was horrible-yelling at the children and lacking any method or philosophy towards her teaching. Before we removed our child from the school, I phoned the principal to discuss options with her but she never returned the call. I was also very unhappy with the first day of kindergarten and wish I had done as the other mother and gone into the class. I found the parent body and student body to be the best part of the school. There are many nice families.
This review was posted by a parent.

The difference between Fairburn being a good school, and having it become a great school, is really the principal. I think that the principal has her heart in the right place, but she can be both dishonest and Machiavellian in her approach to handling the kids and the parents. In our case, she has not only failed to live up to the promises she has made, but she has not been honest and straightforward about the matter(s). I agree with one of the prior reviewers that children with higher than average academic potential will be left behind at Fairburn, and minimizing differentiation between students is part of the culture that the principal tries to create: you either value this or you don't. If you want an academic environment that will accommodate differentiation between students, this probably isn't the school for you.

I love this school and the teachers are great the only thing I would improve is the safety.

Teacher quality is fine (with some exceptions) but not happy with its leadership.
This review was posted by a parent.

The teachers are the best in this school they truly care for the students but the principal in the other hand only cares about the test scores.
This review was posted by a parent.

My son finished kinder and 1st grade in this school. We are very happy with the school overall. Teachers are very nice and competent. The principal uses 'tough love' approach which can be hard on some protective parents. The only down side is too much focus on test scores. Good parents involvement/PTA in general.

Parental involvement is high. Academic instruction is excellent. Many extracurricular programs are available.
This review was posted by a parent.

I am very happy with the education my son is getting at this school. His second grade teacher is a wonder. Third and fourth grade teacher have also been fine. The school has a working conputer lab, a chorus program, and a good after-school program.

We love this school! The teachers are amazing, creative, innovative and we are so lucky to be at Fairburn - a gem in the LAUSD
This review was posted by a parent.

I am extremely impressed with this school. The teachers are caring, the school itself is a little gem, and the STAR program is tops! The principal is a bit gruff, but that's her personality. She seems to be trying harder this year to be more of a people-person and is definitely more accessible.
This review was posted by a parent.

Academically this school is supposed to be fantastic. My child just started kindergarten and my one complaint is that there is too much homework for kids that age after a full day at school. I also have been less than thrilled with the way that certain major issues have been handled, I have foun dvery little regard for the children and great emphasis on test scores, school accomplishments, etc... I keep waiting to find the great school that everyone has told me I am so lucky to have as my home school. Test scores aren't everything.

Fairburn is a great community school! The teachers are absolutely superb and the administration works hard to placate with the highly educated and involved parents. Fairburn is the best that education, private or public, has to offer!

Excellent school, very strong in academics.
This review was posted by a parent.

We've been extremely pleased with our Fairburn experience, and I can highly recommend the school to neighborhood families. Because of the increasing popularity of the school, there are very few places for students on permit - last year no new permits were taken. But Fairburn remains a small neighborhood school - fewer than 400 students, it is friendly and low-key. In 2005, Fairburn implemented an all-day Kindergarten program, with great success. The teachers are excellent, experienced, qualified. Fairburn is an academic school, in the top 10 of high scoring schools in LAUSD. Many students are GATE identified. However, the school does not separate the children, but provides an enriched differentiated education within each classroom, so all students benefit. There is a core group of active parents, who have raised money for the extras that the school district does not pay for - computer lab, library renovation, playground upgrade, P.E.coach, Science textbooks.
This review was posted by a parent.

I've been an active parent, and I don't believe that parents want to 'run everything.' We just want to have be treated with respect by the Principal. I recommend that parents who want to be active in the school stay close to home, working in their own child's classroom.

Good School with strong acacdemics and good teachers.
This review was posted by a parent.

I would disagree with a recent review that states this school is ideal for your gifted child. There are a lot of gifted kids drawn here because we used to have streamed classes from grades 3-5. However, two years ago, the principal abolished this. She says we still have an SAS, but none of us can figure out what exactly that means if the gifted kids don't do anything different than the rest of the kids. I do agree with everything people have been saying about the prickly, power mad principal. The kids, teachers, and parents are afraid of her. She seems to prefer it that way. She thinks parents want to 'take over' and attacks them, when in fact they are just representing parent interests and want to be treated respectfully. It's totally wrong to run the school like the Mafia, punishing those don't agree with one, and rewarding pals.
This review was posted by a parent.

Academic programs are good. All grades tend to give a tremendous amount of homework. Music is available at a very high cost. Parent involvement is high but tends to be overdone by just a few parents who want to control everything.
This review was posted by a parent.

My daughter came from a private school and is getting more one on one attention here at Fairburn and she is flourishing nicely. I can't believe the self confidence that she has now. She can't wait for vacation time to be over, all she asks is 'when is school starting again, I can't wait to go back my teacher makes everything so much fun, you don't even realize your learning it feels like play time especially in science and math.' What! My daughter saying she's having fun in school she's in 4th grade now and this is the first time ever. Thanks Fairbun teachers and your amazing principal who takes the time to know all her students personally.
This review was posted by a parent.

-This is an excellent school for your child if s/he's very strong academically. The teachers are fabulous. -Availability of music: Chorus, plus Larry Newman's fee charging optional afterschool instrumental program is available. -Art: the school was selected to participate in the Arts Prototype Program this year, so if your child is lucky enough to be in a classroom the year his teacher is going through the program, you will LOVE it. Sports: Afterschool Beyond the Bell pickup games, and STAR soccer and basketball leagues There is a booster club provided sports instructor. -Extracurricular : STAR classes, esp. woodcraft, drama, and science are excellent. -Level of parent involvement: Donations to the booster club went down significantly this year, in part to protest certain morale draining decisions on the part of the principal, who gossips avidly and sets parents at each others' throats. The principal is scary, but if you're lucky you won't encounter her.

This school is great! My son started here from Kindergarten and left in the middle of 1st grade because we had to relocate. His class teachers were very nice with young children. The school has a great after school program with lots of enrichment classes.

The best kept secret in Los Angeles. A community of teachers and parents excelling in education! This school has been a wonderful experience for my daughter and I. Her teachers really care as well as the staff. Great leadership equals great results!
This review was posted by a parent.

Great school, but the principal is very much anti-parent. She wouldn't even let the parents bring their kindergarteners to class on the first day of school. She is inflexible and has alienated many people at the school. Most of the teachers are great. The kids are doing very advanced work as well and the playground is wonderful.

Great School. Private school education at a public school. Amazing parent envolvement. One negative is the principal who needs to set a better example to the students.
This review was posted by a parent.

Both my kids attend Fairburn and both love it. They have met great teachers and have made great friends. One unique thing about Fairburn that I rarely see in other schools is the high parent participation that we have at Fairburn. Although at times it may get overwhelming, especially with 2 kids, teacher and parent involvement is what makes Fairburn the great school that it is.

I used to be a student at Fairburn, that was six years ago. I left in '97, just when they started putting grass on the playground. I don't know what it looks like now, but I hope to visit soon. I probably had the best time of my childhood during my first four elementary years. The school was great.

I think the principal is very insensitive, and seems obsessed with test scores. The after school programs are where the true enrichment is at - STAR - which is too bad.

There simply cannot be a better school than Fairburn - public or private. While the academics continue to be stellar, it is the many extras that make this school even more special.
