Calabash Street Elementary School Reviews

we just move from canada, I mus tsay that this school is very good in every way.The teachers are fabulous, but one thing that is really bothering me is the fact that kinder and first graders have to be in the same class.

Mrs. Gillis is a nice lady as is Ms. Ann the vice-principal. We worry that Ms. Ann is going to retire in June and she is the linch-pin that holds the school together. I hope we'll be OK.

I have been a part of calabash for 3 years. 2 years with Ms. Shaffer and this past year with Ms. Gillis. Both the Principals have different styles- but both the principals love the kids, put the school issues as # 1 and are always there for parents. Go to school at recess or lunch-Ms. Gillis is playing handaball or jump rope withthe kids. See has monthly chat with the principals and ALways available via phone. I am suprised to learn some parents cannot find Ms. Gillis. 7:50 am she is there at morning line up and all day around campus. Calabash is a fine school with great set of students and parents. We invite you to our movie night on 6/12 at 6 pm and find out for yourself. More info on www.calabashelementary.com

I have been a parent at this school for six years. The atmosphere on campus is negative. The principal is never on campus. Every time I call to speak to her she is at a meeting. No matter what time I call. I think this detrimental to the school. She needs to get more involved and make herself more available.

Calabash is a small private like school without the expensive costs. It's the best kept secret South of the Blvd. We have new take charge principal, Mrs. Gillis, who has a wonderful open door policy and is willing to listen to all families, situations and new innovative concepts. Mrs. Gillis is a hands on principal who wears tennis shoes at lunch and interacts with our kids in activities. Calabash has an inviting volunteer base of parents and PTA board that welcomes new ideas and annually is expanding fun events for the kids and families. Calabash is a hidden gem of a school. Take a tour or visit us at Open House; it's all on our amazing website. See for yourself. Calabash is the place to be!

I have been a parent at Calabash for three years. The school is a hidden gem! The school has both a beautiful well kept campus and a private scholl atmosphere thanks to the teachers and strong volunteer base. We are lucky to have a pricipal who is always available and approachable when needed by parents. The school has a wonderful library computer lab and excellent programs like Art Trek and books and beyond. Parents are very involved and helpful. The PTA is warm and inviting to all new parents. Many people do not know about the school because it is hidden in a more private residential neighborhood. Anyone interested should check out the schools awsome website.

I have three kids at Calabash. The teachers are very excellent. The school has a strong group of parents who support the Computer l;ab, Art Trek and enrichment programs on campus. There are many fun family events in the year-like lunch on the lawn, the carnival and Dr. Seuss week that make this school very FUN. there is always engaging the students to learn on this campus. the teachers organize field trips for grades 1-5..making this school a truly fantastic.

Moral is low amongst both parents and teachers. The new principal is uninvolved and seems to spend her time implementing new, unnecessary rules instead of dealing with the real issues. Test scores have plummeted over the last three years. The academics and general atmosphere of the school are both lacking. My child is unhappy with teacher turnover and split classes. Not the school it once was.

I have been a part of Calabash for over fifteen years. It is one of the finest schools in the entire LAUSD. The teachers are awesome the Principal is innovative and runs a tight ship. The PTA has many great ideas and fun functions for both adults and kids. Heck even the CHRISTmas party was unbelievably fun. This school is a great place and if you get a chance to have your child attend there , consider your self lucky. I have also seen a few disgruntled families attempt to discredit the school for their own petty personal reasons , and it is sad. I understand their anger , but it does not justify spreading falsehoods about a great school and staff. My challenge to you is to simply visit Calabash. You can see for your self how wonderful this school is.

I have been a part of Calabash for the last 3 years. The Principal is Always available via phone or just walk in. She is ready to talk to you and listens to both good and bad. There is a coffee with the principal every month to bring ideas, concerns to the table. The teachers go the extra mile to give our kids the best. They are Amazing! The PTA bring strong quality program to the school. This makes the education well rounded. Visit the school today!

The best in the valley - teachers who are excited about their profession, a new principal who isn't afraid to take action, and a beautiful, charming and safe campus. Yes, it's part of LAUSD, but Calabash is a true gem - don't waste your money on private school!

Calabash is an amazing school with a fabulous new principal, Mrs. Gillis , who has made fabulous changes to the school and really listens to Calabash families. The PTA is doing an awesome job with events and fun for the kids. It's a shame when a family leaves a school and doesn't write the real truth about the school, but just in anger lashes out. Calabash rocks!!!!

New principal REALLY needs to listen to the parents. Does not put students first. PTA needs an overhaul! No communication, lack of answers. Don't understand what is really going on there. What a shame!

For almost a decade this was a wonderful school with a principal that was very in control. There were almost never any split grade levels. Now, the new principal and VP come to the school, and in the middle of the month, they decide to shake things up and make split classes. The principal must stand up to the district office and say no splits like the last one did. This is a great school... what's happening????? BK

If you are looking for freindly, warm and happy school for your child/ren to go and enjoy every moment Calabsh is your school, when your child wakes up in the morning and is happy to go to school you know that you picked the winner school.

Calabash Elementary School is a gem of a school, a hidden secret. There are no bad teachers!!!! It is a well run school with students learning and having fun while they do it. Come check it out!

Calabash has a new Assistant Principal who is extremely friendly and approachable creating a more inviting environment at the school. The school has a beautiful campus. Parents are active. Great small school.

This has to be one of the most beautiful campus's of any school. I have been with Calabash for many years, and the Assistant Principals change every year. It's a great student body.

Overall a nice small school, but due to it's size too many split classes. Principal lacks charisma and warmth and seems to discourage parent involvement. Some teachers are great and some are mediocre, but since school is so small there is far fewer options if your child gets one of the less inspiring ones.

Calabash is a public school with a private school atmosphere. My son has had a wonderful experience there. The PTA is strong and inviting. I felt welcome immediately and felt my voice was heard very early on. Our teacher was fabulous, better than our previous private school teacher by far! I do wish we had less split classes, but that is an obvious product of our small size. Overall, we are thrilled to be a part of the Calabash family!

My child and I both love Calabash! Everyone knows each other and we have had excellent teachers each year. The one year the teacher my daughter was assigned to was not a good fit the principal immediately suggested moving her to what turned out to be the perfect classroom for her. The other kids are generally good and we have not experienced any real problems with teasing or bullying in the years she has been there.

Calabash was a terrible experience for my child. The class was geared toward the students on the bottom of the learning curve. The classroom was dull and uninviting. There are some well meaning and hard working PTA moms. I agree, don't let the test scores fool you. Not the place for a motivated learner.

If your child is motivated to learn then run far away from Calabash. The teachers teach to the bottom level of the class, so any high achieving kids are bored to tears. The principal is not willing to talk with parents regarding concerns. There are a few hard working and dedicated PTA moms, but the school as a whole is very poor. Don't let the test scores fool you.

Calabash is an amazing school with an incredible Assistant Principal and Principal. The teachers are always working hard to bring out the best in their students. The small campus size ensures that my children are not anonymous, but rather, are cared for.

Fantastic, new Library Media Center and Computer lab. Before and after school care, reading, music and art programs, homework club, safe, separate kinder areas, amazing Special Ed classes, recently a California Distinguished School. Teachers creative, caring...happy, happy kids. Parent volunteers, though few, are incredibly dedicated.

Calabash is not a good school due to classroom are small and overcrowded, teachers are not very nice, not organize except very few of them. This school needs a new management team.

If you care about your childs emotional and academic wellbeing this is not the school for you. The lower grade teachers are rude and uncaring and the principal is worse.

The teachers are wonderful. Discipline and student safety are a high priority but academics top all. The teachers, like everywhere else in California are competing for test scores. No extraciricular programs but the they do have afertschool supervised playground time.

There is no GATE program or SAS. Playgrounds are limited to bounderies for each grade. School has a lot of combined grade classrooms. Principal is unapproachable and rude. Academics are adequate for the average student

This is a very fine school. School leaders are extremely caring. Parents are very much involved in this school.

Good starting point for our 'gifted' student.

The school has small class sizes and a very nice principal. They recently put in a new library and it's beautiful. Many of the programs are funded by donations and the parents are very involved in the improvement of the school's facilities.

Very good teachers. A weak PTA. Music program was fine.

My friends child graduated and she is very happy with the teachers and overall program

great school ,very good teachers good art program some music and sports parents are very involved

Great little community school. Lots of attention to students. Highly recommend. It is a california distinguished school

Both of my children go to Calabash and honestly, I'm fed up with it. I've already begun to look for another school for them to attend. The classes are extremely overcrowded, the teachers (with exception of only 2 of them) seem to have no idea how to teach their classes properly. I've had several conferences regarding many different issues hoping to get something solved, but unfortunately the principal seems not to care. So my advice: it's not worth it, find somewhere else to send your children.

My both children go to Calabash school. It is a very small school and one of the reasons that I like it. But, because of the lack of funding, especially this year, there is no good quality extra activity like Music or Sport. But the teachers, academically, are very good. The other problem is the increased number of split classes, that I think would affect children's progress in both upper and lower grades.

Calabash Street Elementary School is a wonderful school with an outstanding Principal, Vice Principal, office staff and very committed teachers. It is located in a beautiful & peaceful neighborhood. We feel very lucky to have been accepted in under open enrollment and are committed to help in any way possible to keep our school one of the best in the valley. Most importantly, our child is flourishing and absolutely loves it here!

We have been very happy with this small school, tucked away in a pleasant neighborhood. We chose it by visiting several others through open enrollment. We have had good experiences with the teachers, classes and the overall environment. Our child has thrived here with a nice balance of friendships, education and life experiences.

We are very happy with Calabash Street Elementary. This is a wonderful small, quiet neighborhood school with dedicated teachers and administrative staff. Calabash has a strong parental involvement and lots of wonderful families!

Calabash is a wonderful school, with a strong Principal and enthusiastic Vice Principal and a number of excellent, committed teachers and teacher assistance. This school will continue to excell in the future with all the potential staff and committed students and families.
