St. Mark's School Reviews

This is a community school affiliated with an Episcopal church. The emphasis is on the development and growth of the whole child. Not for the snobbish looking for status symbols or the arrogant parent who frets about how 'gifted' their child is. Here all kids are appreciated for their unique talents. It feels like the way public schools used to be when they were worth attending!

The school has an unmatched communtiy feel, and the teachers are involved and grounded with all of the children. Dr. Oleson has a passion for the school, and the direction it is headed - she is not only inspiring to listen to, but engaging to speak with. They have a wonderful Country Fair, which brings all of the feelings of the school's wonderful atmosphere and the parent involvement to the day. A challenging, yet accommodating education for any child.

The head of school wants parents who follow her rules and do not think for themselves. If you do not agree with a program or teacher and ask for a information, discussion or compromise, you will probably be asked to leave the school.

I agree with the reviews about the rigid, uninspired atmosphere of the school. The bottom line is that the school pretends to be something that it is not. Unless your child is right in the middle of the pack, and content to stay there, this is not the right choice. The adminstration is quite unresponsive to any concerns/questions. I'm sorry to say that Saint Marks is a huge disappointment. Children aquire information and skills, but don't seem to learn how to learn.

While Saint Mark's claims to value individuated learning and differentiated teaching, it is unwilling and unable to put such philosophies into practice. If your child is at all advanced or even intellectually curious, this school will be very frustrating. Unless your child fits their one-size-fits-all model of education--despite their promotional materials--this is not the place for him/her. The school is good at training average to above-average students, but don't look for anything innovative here.

Lovely campus; the school office used to be a home. Lots of trees. The school has high standards and places graduates into top tier secondary schools. There are two classes for each grade level and the teachers are warm and supportive. There is a requirement that parents give time to the school and I have found the other parents to be very friendly. There is not a lot of teacher turnover; most have been there for some time. My daughter loves the art program. It is run out of the 'Art Barn' which used to be the home's garage. There is a science room and every class, including first through sixth, goes for science with the science teacher. There are also strong programs in music and computers. Very welcoming, homey atmosphere!

Saint Mark's is a great school with a great community of teachers and families. There are lots of great programs and activities. The fees have been raised substantially over the last 4-5 years as the school has separated from the adjacent church. The demographics are shifting as a result - the school used to be committed to having a diverse student population and reasonable fees. The school is well maintained.

If you have children who just blend in - the school is perfect. Great field trips, involved parents and a good teacher-studend ratio. Should you child be eager to learn, does not except a no without explaination and wants to know things which are ahead of her/his classmates expect difficulties. The advise of medical treatment gets out to fast and easy, before all efforts are considered. The principal's leadership could be stronger. If the same topic is addressed from several parents in a short period I do expect the principal to initiate corrective actions.
