I wish that I could break out the Middle School from the High school as I think the middle school is ok--the teachers this year have been pretty good. However, the high school is a mess- the entire teacher corps quit this year, and one of the teachers told me to pull my child out because the culture had not been supported or nurtured and is verging on an 'idiocracy'. Unfortunately the Principal and the 'Director of operations' are very smug and self satisfied, and therefore there is no real response to parent and teacher concerns. Their upper grades are a disgrace and it is difficult, if not impossible, for even motivated kids to get a decent education. It is frustrating and sad how unresponsive the leadership has been and I feel sorry for the kids who may have to go to summer school because their units may not count.

The new year is starting out even better than last year. It is less chaotic, they are having community building days so there is a whole school, from elementary to high school connection. My child's teachers are highly involved and the results are such that my middle schooler says, 'I would never go anywhere else.' We defected from Sierra Madre and the contrast is vastly different. We have made new friends but wish we didn't have to leave old friends in order for our two children to get a well rounded education. The teachers are awesome. I can't speak highly enough about the principal and staff this year, a cohesive, responsible and caring unit. When things need to change they change and it is for the good of all the students, not a few. We are thankful Kate decided to open this school.

This is one school in the Pasadena District to watch. The climate is so inclusive and that is a hard thing to accomplish. Not perfect but they work hard at it. The middle to high school (up to 10th this year) has achieved a great API score in spite of the new school start up pains. Unlike several PUSD middle schools it separates out the middle from elementary school scores so you can really compare. Would like to see more break out in the scores from ethnicity to special education but this school is rocking. We are staying for another year. We chose it lot's of dissapoint with PUSD schools. They are able to respond quickly to solve issues. Ok to give criticism but also offer a solution. New teachers have been brought in to round out last years. There are small classes and a revised schedule.

Aveson GLA is a small, student-centered school that focuses on engaging the students to take personal responsibility in their education. The curriculum is partly based on familiar drill/repetition tasks but mostly organized around project-based learning. This model involves giving students freedom to organize their projects (with supervision) and requires them to develop self-discipline to track and complete their work satisfactorily and on time. The first year has certainly had it's challenges, but it is simply amazing that the school has managed to instill their philosophy and implement their model for the learning environment as successfully as they have in such a short amount of time. There is simply no limit to what can be achieved given the dedication and professionalism of the staff and the involvement of the parent community.
