great school, great education

A wonderful school. Academic programs are A+. Parent involvement could be better.

I just wanted to tell you how excited my daughters and I are about some of the great teachers they have this year: 1. J. Feinberg for Geometry What an amazing teacher! He is so excited about the students and subject matter and has very clear criteria and means by which the students can achieve success. 2. Barasch for Honors English My daughter states that he is the most awesome teacher. I have read his biography posted on the SOCES site, which is very impressive. He has my daughter excited about English. 3. Mr. Noguchi for Science and Mr. Arlington for US History. Both seem to be exceptional teachers, who love teaching, care about the students and are talented in imparting information. 4. Mr. Johnson My daughter has completed 2 years of flute in just 1 yr. thanks to Mr. Johnson and her love of the flute. Incredible, dedicated teachers!

I came to SOCES in the 9th grade after being at private school for 9 years. It was a great transition to a public school, providing small class sizes and faculty that actually cares for their students. After watching my peers and other students in lower grades, I find that starting children off in the 4th grade provides a good foundation for both students and teachers to get to know each other, allowing a higher success rate in the long run. It is a fabulous school, more like a community and family.

I am new to CES and have had such a great start already. I am so happy about the decision I have made to send my kids to this amazing school.

I love this school, because it is a family atmosphere and really takes care of you. I am a graduate of this school, and sometimes wish I could go back. Everyone knows everyone and it just makes it a great learning experience.

Sherman Oaks Center for Enriched Studies is more than a school, we are a community raising children to be thinkers. Smart, creative, caring teachers and staff are what make this school and our children blossom each and every morning.

This past June, 2009, I retired as a choral music teacher of 36 years in the LA Unified School District. The last 16 years I taught at SOCES. The entire school community works tirelessly to provide a comprehensive educational experience for a 4-12 span school. It Works! High test scores are not the only indicator of a great school. SOCES provides opportunity and support for students to prepare for life as people of character who will have a positive impact in their world. Sherman Oaks CES is a great school!

Not only did I attend school there and graduate, I love the school so much I went back to teach there!

I'm a teacher with an administrative credential that willing sought out SOCES based on its reputation as a collegial, student centered academic campus designed to prepare children for a university education. The school has not disappointed in this respect. If your child needs special attention you will get it, but not at the expense of other deserving children! If your child is gifted you will receive top notch AP courses in the later HS years. If your child is musically oriented you will not be disappointed. However, if you feel a need for an intensive sports program at the HS level look elsewhere.

SOCES is a fantastic magnet school, especially for academically-oriented students. Half the students here have been identified as gifted, thus if your child gets accepted off the highly competitive lottery, he or she will get to go to school with many other high-achieving classmates. Beginning in fifth grade, smart students get placed in honors classes, which allow the teachers to progress through the curriculum more rapidly. There is a palpable positive academic culure and vibe that the students benefit from here. My kids pretty much want to do their homework; they know that all their friends are going to have their assignments completed the next day and that the teachers will be holding all students accountable. Lots of terrific, creative, veteran teachers! Mr. Johnsen is the school's dynamic, famous band director. Students who get accepted to SOCES come from stable families and usually stay from 4th through 12th grade. An LAUSDtreasure!

this is my 4rth year and and i still have new things that i discovered. some teachers are really good at teaching but others kinda harder i would recomend this school for people who wants to have fun learning stuff.

I just started attending SOCES this year and love the school. Although it is not as chalenging as the school I just moved her from, I feel much more at home here. The elective choices are amazing and the AP classes are great. One thing that SOCES does that most school's don't do is, they take high school students to Peirce collage (which is just a few blocks away) and let them take their AP classes there, so you get a feel of what collage is really like. The classes you take at Peirce during SOCES school hours count as both high school and collage credits. Overall I love SOCES. I also noticed some comments about teachers. Some comments ore true, but some teachers are truly amazing. You get some terriffic teachers and some blah ones, but most teachers that I have had have been really good!!

I would highly recommend this school. The counselors, teachers, and administrators are very helpful, especially during high school. However, a good student will succeed anywhere, regardless of whether he or she attends a normal elementary school, middles school, or high school. The only difference between attending any other school and attending SOCES, is that students are provided with greater attention and are given a wide range of support. Overall, my experience in SOCES was great, but I do have to make an emphasis in the high school section. The school itself especially the college counselors have a great interest in getting everyone to college, so big thumps up from me!

I am completely disillusioned. I have a child who is highly gifted but is struggling emotionally at SOCES. There is no adequate help available. I am told since the grades are good there is no need 4 help/intervention! If appears if your child does not fall into the catagory of 'no child left behind' and is struggling he/she will be 'left behind'! I picked this school because of it's wonderful reputation and started in 4th grade to get in. It was extremely challenging to enter at such a young age but again because of it's reputation I trusted what seemed to be 'the process'. It was A mistake!! If your child needs additional assistance as a gifted student rethink SOCES. It is perfect for any child who 'fits in'& much of the staff is great, however if your gifted child, like mine needs any help, or creative individual services, look elsewhere!

I LOVE this school! The school has a wide choice of activities and the teachers are excellent! THis school is a magnet school and you have to be accepted to attend to this school. SOCES is ranked as #1 in the LAUSD!

I Love This School! I have two boys attending one a senior and the other in 6th grade. This school is like a private school. Safe and caring environment My oldest son well prepared for college applying to 10 top colleges.

I just graduate from SOCES in June 2008. I was a charter member, meaning I was there the whole 9 years, 4th -12th grade. I must say being with, and growing up with the same group of people was great, I was always comfortable there, and for the most part the whole grade was friends with each other. Most teachers at SOCES are pretty good. There are of course the few that aren't quite up to par, but that comes with any school. I would definitely recommend the school to anyone thinking of sending their kid(s) there.

I have two kids at Soces. All I can say is that whenever I have any problem with one of them and need to talk to either a teacher, a counselor or someone in the attendance office I am always amazed to see how they get out of their way to be helpful. Not only do they know who my child is but they are concerned, care about them, take the time to listen and come up with creative solutions to help the student . I feel the families and the students are well supported by the staff. Great school.

When my son got into Soces after being in a private school, I was nervous. But two weeks into it he was loving it. The teachers are amazing, the level of curriculum is high, and the individual attention the kids are given is better than being in a private shcool.

SOCES is a great school overall. It has a family oriented atmosphere. Many of the students have been here since the 4th grade and much of the staff has been here for quite some time too. Overall, the education that your child will receive is excellent. Of course, as in all schools not all the teachers are doing as great of a job as they should be doing. That's where parental involvement is particularly important. Much of the success of a child is due to the level of the parent's involvement as well as the child's and teacher's dedication to studies.

SOCES is like winning the lottery or the college of your choice My oldest child started in the 4th grade. 4th grade is very overwhelming but if you can get through grade 4 youve made it all the way. When my youngest got into 4th grade I was so excited but I dreded the 4th grade homework. but she did amazingly well. Now my oldest is a senior and my youngest is in grade 6. Its a wonderful place for siblings especaily when they start to drive and the administrators I gave a 10+. In my opinion you get 5 out of 6 great teachers a year. I would never have my child anywhere else. I love SOCES

The transition in 4th grade from a small elementary school to a campus with 1700+ kids ranging in age from 9 to 18 was a challenge; however, our child adapted to the change and is now reaping the benefits of this school. We are very pleased with the administration, academics, parent involvement, and general pride in this school community.

This is an excellent school. I have two boys, one graduated from this school and the other still attends. I felt like I won the Lotto when my sons were accepted to this school. The science and AP classes are excellent. The principal is so dedicated and hard working, he practically lives at the school. I feel that my kids are safe at this school and are getting a great education.

Good school amongs the LAUSD school district but please dont confuse this with LA CES.. that is the school that is in top 10-0 high schools in US.. SOCES is a good school for the money (its free) however academically after 8 thru 12th it does not come close to other -mainly private schools in area.. Schools in Venura county are much better

I was a student at SOCES. There math program was not the greatest. Also, the students all know each other because they have been with each other from 4th to 12th grade.

Soces is a great school. They should make it funner. Im a seventh grader and ive been here since fourth grade. I think my teachers are great it needs remodling and i think they give us a bit to much work, but overall everything is great!

Physical Education is not as strong as it should be.

This is the best school in the Valley. The students are well behave, good kids. The parents are caring for the future of the kids. The school is a little conservative, sometime the kids have the ability to excel but the counselor will not allow them to take the advance class. For the gifted kids, it is not a good idea to hold them back, they feel bore easy, they need to feel the challenge in order for them to advance.

fromthe time i spent there, i was amazed. the food was great, the teachers nice and the extracurricular activities are stupendous.

In the words of my current 10th grader, 'Too much busy work.' Student has to memorize and regurgitate material without making meaningful connection. Not much hands-on education nor academic skills development. Student not encouraged to be inventive, critical thinker. Student rated only 2 out of the 15 teachers student has had during past 16 months as being effective.

I love SOCES and my child does too. Fourth grade is a tough transition but totally worth it. It has a small school feel and all the teachers know all the kids. It is a wonderful place and we are so lucky to be there!

SOCES is an excellent small learning community that stresses academic excellence while addressing the needs of the whole child. Relationships that students make in 4th and 5th grade extend through high school and beyond. Teachers are committed to the success of their students.

Great school, great teacher! SOCES is in its 25th year. Go Knights.

Not bad. THe size of the campus can be very intimidating for the youngsters. There are some classes that work and some that are just average. Their Philosophy is different than the actual application in some respects.

Very fine learning, but facilities aren't great, and there isn't enough dicipline on bad kids.

Great school. Academically oriented. The majority of the teachers I've had my kids take classes with are excellent educators (of course, there is always an exception to the rule). I am glad to have my children be part of what makes SOCES the great school it is.

I have 2 children(boy and girl)who attend SOCES.It is a wonderful, enriching ,and academic school. They both started in 4th grade, it was a bit of an adjustment, but very worth it.SOCES has great teachers, and a terrific staff. We feel like a big family, with about 1700 kids and 9 grades.Lots of Exrta Curricular stuff,(and award winning),like Sports, Cheer, Band, Speech and Debate. Both kids are in honors, and we are not planning to change schools till college.0% drop out rate, and most kids do go to college. We have an active Booster Club and are starting with PTA.96% of our kids are bussed from some where in the valley. Thanks so much to our wonderful teachers and staff, for making SOCEs such a great place to go to school.

I can say they are a marvelous choir. She is very sad to be leaving school next year but I can reccomed this to anyone this school is a great school for kids who want to succeed. A big thanks to Robert Weinberg (principlal), Laura Hale (Assistant Princiapal), and all the adminstrators and teachers there.
