Los Angeles Center for Enriched Studies Reviews

LACES is the best, everyone loves each other and everyone in class actually pays attention. There is no fooling around people actually want to learn and the teachers are outstanding, and teach the best they can.

Disappointment. Laces has a reputation for being one of the best in Lausd, but they're academics arent as good as you would hope.

My daughter is in eighth grade this year and has loved it every year. She can't wait to go from summer back to school....she counts off the days. We are very happy here. Thank you, LACES!

One of the very few public schools that offers education from 6th grade to 12th grade. Excellent teachers and staff that care for the student's education. Emphasizes college and further education. In my class alone, 99% of the class went on to college after graduating high school.

This is a high stardards school. Better than private school. Everybody knows each other by name. We are a big family, no racial problems. Its about studing and doing the best that they can. Its not about who is more popular is who has the best grade. Parents are very involved in school. We really need more fundings to the school.

LACES consistently strives for high academic standards and sets a standard of excellence on their campus.

Great school. Rigorous classes. Gifted students are not held back but challenged. My sixth grade daughter is very happy here. There are a lot of enrichment activities with a lot of choices in electives. What other incoming 7th grader can choose journalism and Spanish, Japanese, and Korean languages, just to name a few. I highly recommend this school.

LACES has undoubtedly had a reputation of one of the top schools in LAUSD. Over the past few years, however, I have witnessed the quality of the academic rigor in courses that aren't honors/AP deteriorate. With teacher layoffs and retirements, I'm concerned that our children's education will suffer.

My son is in 6th grade and he loves LACES. I have been blown away by the principal, Dr. Kim, who showed up on a Saturday afternoon to support 6th and 8th graders who competed in the Science Bowl at Cal State Los Angeles. She attends so many school related events. The teachers are incredibly commited to the students. The campus has a great vibe to it. The Sports Center is beautiful and the P.E. program allows the kids to swim, play tennis, basketball, and the like on a rotating schedule. The 'enriched' aspect allows the kids to take an additional elective and there are so many to choose from. It is truly a college prep school with 80 minute classes and a block schedule All in all, an excellent school and wonderful experience. My son is happy to go to school and LACES is why.

As a seventh grader at LACES I think the school is great although the sports program needs work( except basketball). The teachers are great, there's like ten peer helping and tutoring groups and there's an activity like lunch games to join in( anything from dance contests to relay races to ty die). LACES is a great school!

My son is a current 6th grader and so far I have no complaints. All his teachers and counselor are very involved once you (the parent) gets involved. I like the diversity. A great change for my son. There was an issue with a bully but this got resolved immediately. I cant say anything about the sports bcz unfortunately my son is not that into it. But all his teachers are great. So far I feel that I made a good choice for my son. This school has definitely challanged him in a great, positive way!

Bullying and teasing are constant here. The administration can't be bothered to stop it, except to react to individual cases. They don't seem to recognize that a culture change is needed to prevent the school from finally losing any remnant of its past reputation. This school is going downhill fast.

I am going to the 10th grade next year and have been at LACES since the 6th. LACES is an excellent school that has a rigorous curriculum and sometimes, it really challenges me. However, LACES sports teams are horrible , we don't have a football team, the coaches for the sporta are usually staff members that don't have the slightest clue how to be a coach. I take my sport very seriously and sometimes I regret even joining the team and I get upset even thinking about it. LACES also has a few teachers that are unfair and discriminate against certain students Now don't get me wrong I love LACES but, sometimes I just think we need to put a little more effort into making our school a little bit better.

Good school. They prepare your children for college which gives them a different outlook on studying. Both my daughters graduated from LACES (2003 and 2006) and they benefit greatly! Also I love the diversity. Good for all kids to be explosed.

Two of my children already graduated from LACES and my last one is there now. This is a terrific school!! It is a college prep environment and kids are prepared to be accepted to and do well in college. Students who want to learn do learn at this school. I love the diversity, the quality of the teaching and the supportive atmosphere!

Excellent school. Thoroughly prepared me for the academic rigor of university courses.

Hi, my name is Amber and i attend LACES. This school is one in a million, it gives you a sense of happiness and friendship, while at the same time providing a scholarly environment.

Excellent school. I spent months and months doing research for my daughter s high schools selection, and this school exceeded all our expectation. Great school spirit, courtesy, mutual respect between students and teachers, lot of individual attention to pupils, courses flexibility. If you want to learn sky is the limit in LACES.

Teachers don't send updates to parents when your child is slipping.

While some teachers provide a nuturing environment for us students to excell, other teachers make it difficult to excel in the class and on standardized tests. On the other hand, LACES has a great and widely diversified student body which makes my group of friends so great. Its a mixed review because I give LACES a 10 on diversity and probably a 6 when it comes to the teachers.

My son has been at LACES for 3 years, and we have been very impressed with the teachers and administration. Every teacher we have had works hard to motivate the students, and my son's academic ability has improved markedly. We were unable to talk to his counselor before the end of the last semester about his classes for the fall, and his counselor arranged to see him in mid-July. I was impressed as we met, because he had studied my son's file and was able to provide specific encouragement and guidance to assure us that my son would be on the right track for college. LACES is not perfect, but it is a good fit for parents who want a quality education for their child.

This is great school, especially if you take the time and effort to get involved to find out what it is going on. Friends of LACES (the non-profit fundraising parent group) makes lots of activities possible here. It is college prep and prepares students for college as long as they do the work required.

I am an eight grader at LACES, a terrific public school to send your child to and I have to say I am greatly shocked by the reviews given to our outstanding school by parents. The teachers are excellent, we have an outstanding history, math, science department. [We are] a college prep school. They are preparing us for the years ahead. I do agree to some of the accusations of 'bad' teachers and I have encountered some myself. It is an easy thing to handle, the administrative staff offers us a chance to get out of the class. Few take the option. I love my school.

I am extremely disappointed with this school. An overwhelming majority of the teachers do not pay attention to respect of others within the classroom and let the students mock and humiliate each other while the teacher ignores it. Diversity problems exist and the staff and parents look the other way. Discipline is poorly followed through. A large number of teachers assign paperwork during class time and don't teach, don't give informative lectures and don't encourage open discussion. No excitement or vibrancy in the classroom and the students are bored with routine assignments. It has gone downhill at a fast pace. The number of substitutes is alarming. The school's past reputation of being a great school remains in the past. Seems like a strong parent group, but only involves the parents who are sold on the school and they don't discuss weaknesses and needed improvements.

I am very pleased with the academic program, the one improvement I suggests is to have a tutoring program after school for children that need help.

I am a 9th grader at LACES right now. From a students perspective I don't really like LACES. LACES has lost a lot of credit in the past couple of years. All but a few LACES teachers actually care about what students do there. I would not recommend sending your child to LACES. I can already tell that it will start to decline as a public school.

I'm in 8th grade and have gone to laces since 6th grade. I could never imagine going anywhere else. I have found myself being friends with people of all different races and beliefs (very unlike elementary school). I am taking french 2 this year (where as in other schools, I would not be able to) and I'm in all honors classes. While some teachers are better than others, there is a great opportunity to learn. I absolutely love laces....

LACES is wonderfull school. The teachers are excellent and the student diversity is refreshing. Forbes ranks it at #47 in its Best Schools in the Nation survey. And in previous years it was #10, but it normally outranks all the LAUSD schools. I highly recommend this school to everyone.

LACES does an awesome job with the hand they're dealt. I am a parent of 10th 12th graders. LACES is the best high school in LAUSD, hands down. Over 10% of the senior class was admitted to UCLA last year, and almost an equal number to Berkelely -- an amazing achievement. They are doing a good job of improving their remaining shortcomings: 1) lack of focus on the middle school: getting much better, mostly thanks to parental involvement; 2) better sports and school spirit: beatiful new athletic facilities will make a huge difference, but since the magnet lottery makes it impossible to recruit, student/athletes will have to find their own way; 3) the acheivement gap between ethnic and socioeconomic groups: good progress here, too, the adiminstration is really leaving no stone unturned. LACES is a great place for focused, highly motivated kids. And you can't beat the price!

LACES, has helped me reach a whole new academic standard . I am continuosly on the honor roll.

Its a good school. However, there are only a few teachers that your child will really just like and appreciate and excel with

The acadmemic programs are good, they're not as great as you would get if you spent money to pay for a really good private school. Great public school. There is a two school phemn, basically if you push your child to succeed he or she will be in the top half of the school. Racial integration in the good classes is limited, but not for lack of trying. Extremely good select teachers, very open. Nice faculity. New Principal. There is increased parental involvement, which is truly annoying. The sports department isn't that great, go somewhere else if you want your child to get recruited. Pretty good in: Golf, girl's volleyball, girl's soccer. Great number of clubs, easy accessibility, good music teacher (1) and program, saturday music program available.

The academic standard of this school has decreased in recent years due to the retirement of the school's founding principal. However, this school continues to be one of the better options in LAUSD. My children succeeded in this school and have since gone on to college. The availability of art and music programs at the school are declining as they are everywhere these days. However, with the construction of the new gym sports programs are improving. Parents are very involved. The PTA atthis school is strong.

This was a small school environment but the school district has added several hundred which has impacted all programs. There are excellent dedicated teachers and staff but district mandates, lack of support services have affected the schools as it has all district schools. The teachers have high expectations of all students and most have attempted to avoid the tracking. There has been a change in administration and a challenging transition period. If this school can receive the support services and repairs/supplies it needs,as well as tighten up discipline,it should continue to be the best. There are over a hundred donated computers sitting in storage because faculty cannot obtain tables to put them on. Students are sitting on makeshift chairs, there is a shortage of textbooks and substandard number of books in the library. This schools students have scored #1 in LA and # 10 in US due to the high expectations.

This school really prepares its students not only for the real world but also for many of our country's most elite universities. It is also very diverse which introduces the students to the world and diversity around them.

LACES is an excellent college preparatory diverse public high school. From the experience of our son since 6th grade, its strengths are in history, English and math. We have been quite disappointed in the science teachers. The principal is excellent and very dedicated.

I thought that this school was great. My child learned a lot of things, and this school helped my child. I think that LACES is a good for any middle schooler.

My son has been at this school for two years and I am displeased with this school totally. I have made unannounced visits and found no teacher just substitutes. The kids are not getting any structured teaching. The kids are left running the substitute. The school is not clean and trash is everywhere, inside the classrooms are dirty. Where are the maintenance workers. My son wants to learn, but unhappy with the teachers and school himself. When a child wants to learn, but not given the chance what do you do. Most of the kids who attend this school are not failures and want to learn and it seems that most of them are being brushed to the side.

I was a student who just graduated in 2003. This school is one of the best in LAUSD. In the history and English department, teachers like Mr. Rutschman and Mr. Draper, and math and language teachers like Mr. Vriesman and Mrs. Atkinson are what make this school great. They truly care about their students and they have prepared me to do well in college. The principal is not the true backbone of the school. He is slightly weak compared to the last principal because he is more concerned about following the set rules than what works best for the school. But overall, I had a great educational experience at this school.
